Was that the Ken Fischer tribute amp, that Billy has had, or has? If so then that has a different output transformer (5K2 rather than the usual 6K6), which makes for a much more aggressive amp and is closer to the 'optimal' impedance for EL34s, so should definitely produce more power.
No, that amp showed up the following year, Billy brought a chassis along with him one year that was different, something that he'd built, not the KF tribute amp.

They were both equally loud, though.

Mark - I do have a EV12L in a EV spec type cab. It actually works well - sonically - when the amp is at higher gain settings. At lower gain settings - and it takes a bit to saturate the speaker - its kinda edgy. But either way, the thing is so frickn loud that I have to walk away from it. I have thought about this, too, in how the Dumble guys like this cab/speaker, and have decided that here its the MV thing that lets it work so well. Eh, and the MV thing doesn't work quite the same in the Express for my taste.

On another note, I did plug a Pure64 cab into my Express, running some Austone speaker, don't know what it was actually, and it sounded fantastic. Aren't you running one of those speakers, the Austone brand? Man, I have heard the Scumbacks and they sound great, no argument, but I know the next single 1/12 box I try is going to be with one of the Austone speakers. I just have to get this over with, try one. Eh, and it could be that cab, too? Maybe one of Jim's speakers would sound just as good in the same cab. Yeah, hard for me to ignore the actual cabinet design I think.

Glen - Yes sir, you have got all the head smarts and tone experience to run about anything (including a metal speaker cab?) with your amp and make it sound good without hurting anything. !! Which is not to say it doesn't sound fantastic, because I'm sure it does, but hey, you're kinda in the Express-Zen-Master catagory, and not typical, I think.

Rooster,

Yeah the EVM12L is for those amps you want to have high headroom and they deliver pristine clean tone. That is why I was wonder what a high watter/high efficient speaker sound like with the Express.

I don't have a very good collection of speakers and can't figure out how the heck so many guys have tried this and tried that. I would go broke having so many speakers on hand.

I do not have any austone speakers or scumbacks but I need some.

I googled austone but cant find any results other than the pedal maker.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have built a few express type combos running 2 x 6v6's. I have used a few Weber 30 watt Alnico speakers, a couple with Scumback 30 watt speakers, one with the newest ASW Alnico 20w speaker . The one with the 20w ASW has seen continuous use for almost 4 months , absolutely no problems sounds the best of all. Ron assured me it could handle the 2x6v6's and it has. The 30 watt webers are still sounding great after a year and 1/2 of steady gigging. Same for the scumbacks. These are all open back designs too.

that being said, I would not use them single for a el34 express or any other 2x el34 or 6l6 amp.

I have had good sounds from the 65w scumbacks as well. But do prefer the sound of the lower powered speakers in a 2x 6v6 amp. ymmv.

The only speaker I have not liked the sound of was the EV12L classic I was asked to use by a friend and client. I think it just needs more amp to really open up, sounded very constricted and lifeless compared to all the others. I did try it with a 35 w 2xel34 express also and same results, nowhere as good sounding as the others. They do seem to be preferred in a Dumble though.
