Rohren EL84 tubes

These tubes are mid-rangy. That is if they are from the 73.

Try mid seventies through early 80's Russian tubes. These sound more articulate,.

+1 to what Joshua said!

I agree, the Rohren are a bit midrangy, but still chimey (I have the cut control way up). If I drop the bass and treble but keep the cut control and volume up, I get a sort of Marshally tone.

I also use the Russian tubes I got from Sargent overdrive. These are fantastic as well which more chime and harmonic sparkle then the Rohren.

Both are great, just different flavors, IMHO.

Hubie-

On what amp did Ken use the Blues? Glen K. noted that he did not like them with the Express- perhaps they would be good with the Vox inspired Rocket (since that's what's in a real AC-30)?????

Thanks!

Hi Ron,

Kenny used the following speakers

Express - Pre rola 30's for a les paul

pre rola 25's for a strat or tele (003 cone)

Liverpool - Pre rola 30's for a les paul

pre rola 25's for a strat or tele (003 cone)

Rocket two 2x12 blues (one open and one closed)

Songwriter 30 two 2x12 blues (one open and one closed)

He said the old speakers can't be replicated. If you take an old speaker and hit the bracket it chimes a musical note.

Try that with a new one and it doesn't

I use a 15" Weber blue dog. I love that speaker. It is real organic and woody sounding to me with plenty of volume. I think using a single speaker also cuts back on the apparent volume a bit.

Wrecks sound best to me with multi-speaker setups. I used my Wreck type builds with various speakers and they all sound pretty good. To me it's still a personal preference. Use what you like...or have.

I tried that with the vintage Jensen P10Q's I am selling and you are right,,,they do chime a musical note.

Hubie-

Thanks for the great speaker info, I figured that the Blues would work a treat with the Rocket!! I put that info into the next revision of the build guide, I hope that you're OK with that.

Many thanks again,

Ron

Does anyone think the Scumbacks nail the Pre Rola Celestion sound?

I ask because they seem to have tried to duplicate many of the original
components. They refer their "003" type cone paper. Didn't Ken say he
prefered the "003" paper? I'm curious about the percievable changes
with regard to doping. I'm reluctant to base my opinion on the usual website clip offerings.
I like the mention of a minimal break-in period for all the models.

Sadly, no mention of the Scumback speaker's resonant chime abilities. That may be yet another quantity that's outside of the
empirical data, albeit useful to some. 8)

I realize speaker tone is a subjective judgement based on experience &
a host of other things. Someone's relatively unbiased viewpoint
re: Scumback vs the Pre Rolas would be a welcome read.

Thanks in advance,
NG.

I have a couple of Scumbacks , a 55 and a 75. they are very chimey , the combination is very sweet. The first time I heard this combination in a friends 4x12 , 65 amps cab I thought they had to be Alnico. He even had the same 4x12 with 2 alnico blue celestions and 2 55hz scumbacks. Believe it or not the
55 and 75 ceramics sounded sweeter and chimier (is that a word?). These are open back cabs.

I also have a 2x12 z best cab with a scumback 55 and a Red Fang, WOW. Blows away most 4x12's. It was a/b'd with several old marshalls with 25 and 30 watter greenback. Everyone was amazed that it romped all over the real deal. just had more of everything.
I just sold a 72 marshall 2x12 with original 30/55 blackbacks, The scumbacks are just as good.
