Dave, sorry, very one dimensional to my ears. You have to loose those Mallory caps - they are total tone suckers, metalized polyester. Not anything Ken ever used.

Since you have the sound bites and the guitar player that can duplicate the parts, how about you buy a set of my NOS Mallory branded PVC
OD caps for half price + USPS shipping? Let me know via private message, $25 + shipping, all PayPal and I'll mail them out tomorrow. Then you'll know what the right caps can do.

...But I do want you to make a new recording so that everyone can compare the two versions. 8)

Is the Mallory 150 are that bad ?

What would you use if you can't have the original Mallory PVC ?

Orange Drop(witch series ? )
Sozo
Cornell Dubilier...

Cause NOS PVC Mallory cap gonna end one day...

Please and thank you !

Dave,

Your amp sounds great to me! Very smooth tone, IMO. IF you enjoy it, I wouldn't change the caps out.

I've built Express and other TW amps with many different types of caps they sound pretty much the same loud and aggressive.

I'm almost out of old Mallary OD's so I now use Mojotone Dijon or M150's.

Very nice sounding amp. The tone of that first note in the first recording immediately reminded me of a 68 Marshall. With regards to caps its not so much that Mallory 150s are bad its all down to how you feel about the amp. If you like the tone then leave them in. If you're unhappy with it then perhaps buy the NOS PVC Mallory Caps off Rooster (good price btw). I used 6PS Caps in my amp and they sound great too.

Richie, curious about your suggestion that Komet uses the M150s. I have seen gut shots of the older yellow colored M150s in a Komet - but how about the newer WHITE versions? This is where I draw the line.

Check this thread out: http://el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=10060.0 This is what I am talking about. They are all Chinese now, pretty sure.

Post a pic of a newer Komet using the WHITE M150s if you have it?

I think we've seen this pic before. But not white 150s.

I thought the difference between yellow and white was the voltage ratings.

Nobody mentioned color :).. all I saw was Mallory 150. I think the yellow generic ones ( not IC) sound better than the 150.:)
I don't have any chassis pics of newer Komets. And don't know what they use.
The white Mallory is "I believe" to be a more flame resistant coating or wrapping.
Mallory are now CDE. And they have many great caps other than the 150s.The 150 are more of a general purpose cap. CDE has lots of data sheets on the different caps.

Yeah, I remember that thread when it came out & like most threads on caps there were a variety of opinions including these (from two different builders) which came directly out of that thread:

"Built identical amps with both, and A/b'd... they sound the same"

"I've built several amps using strictly the white caps (because I like to keep things matching for certain builds) and have mixed them together in others w/ both color types. I haven't noticed any discernable sonic differences "

And there were negative comments also.

I read the difference in M150 color was: The Yellows are +/- 10% and the Whites are +/- 5%.
