Very nice work.
Are you at all concerned with how your preamp voltages will creep up when unloading your PA when reducing power w/ your VVR? Sometimes this can work to your advantage.

I love those phat Solens. I bought some 15uf ones for my "modern deluxe" build.

I'm eager to see how they sound.

Preamp supply splits off before the VVR so there are two "chains" hanging off B+

One for the PI and preamp
One for the PA

On my layout, from the purple lead from the standby, there is a diode on the head of each to prevent any interaction. One chain goes to the VVR off the purple diode, the other goes to B3 (underboard dashed blue line off blue diode). So I haven't done this before but this is the layout I used and don't think there will be any preamp voltage swings when turning the dial. At least this is my understanding of how it is "supposed" to work?

You will still get a swing of about up to 40V going from full power down to as low as it still sounds good. However, don't get too hung up on it as it will still sound great I bet.

FYI my chassis is 2.5" tall to give 'em the room they need with 1/2" turretboard spacers.

I got my chassis from a guy named Brian who makes em up and sells on ebay. He also supplies some to ax84's site admin Chris. That's where I learned about him. His email is (hope he doesn't mind):

amp-chassis (--the at symbol--) comcast D-O-T net

It is a 16x8x2.5 although I'm sure you can get a chassis this size from a lot of places.

Yes I agree. I actually don't mind the voltage increase due to unloading. It lets the preamp maintain some headroom while the output starts clipping. I usually scale the output tubes only though.

Looks great!

I love the look of those Solens.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

I think that's the same guy I got my chassis from...except I didn't get a 2.5". I may have to do some test fitting, considering how tall the solens are!

Surf, If I were you , I wouldn't even bother with the vvr stuff. The larmar works very well.

Paolo, I already drilled the hole for the pot and the VVR3 was only $30 plus cost for a couple diodes I already had. I also read someone put in the VVR with a LarMar and where one starts to get fizzy, the other helps - so they kinda complement each other.

Since I bought two VVR3s from Dana, and want to put the other in a rocket eventually, and have the board turrets in, the diodes mounted and the hole for the pot drilled, I think I will just throw it in and use it as a training routine for the Rocket.

Post your voltages when you get a chance. Looks like the edcor trannys will be here tomorrow so this weekend I am hoping to move forward on my build since my parents are going to watch my kid for a few days, I should have plenty of freetime!

Voltages are the same I already posted a couple of days back.
BTW now that I have heard the thing in the standard configuration, I think i'll play around it a little to optimise the amp for my tastes.
First thing I will rise significantly the PI voltage and will se also the effect on the preamp stages.
I have the feeling that it will improve a little not just in dynamics, but especially in note attack that I like very fast and touch sensitive.
This will probably require to tame a little the highs, but once i will hear it I'll decide what to do.
