What makes an amp clean up well when rolling back?

From my own little experience:
I have tried different modern or vintage style pots, and now for me the best volume pot is the RS "SuperPot".
I have these on all my historic Les Paul (with PAF or P90), works great with the Express to clean up !
Note that the tone pot setting take part to the clean up slope as well...

The pot issue has been recently discussed with respect to Les Pauls and no particular amp in this thread:

The opinions seem to be mixed. I have the RS Superpot and it doesn't solve the issue for me. I have heard that the Hamer's are the best new option. I haven't used them because they are available in short shaft only and I don't feel like modifying wood in my guitars in order to accomodate them. I am getting ready to open up the Superpots and modify them with a razor knife to get the taper that I prefer.
