Another really nice choice is the Fane Studio L.
Re: Speaker for Rocket
I haven't bought a Fane AXA alnico yet maybe I better talk with Darin about that sometime
best speakers
I know this probably won't help you, but after waiting a few months, we finally got a chance to fire more new Trainwrecks: Express, Liverpool, & Rocket.
We tried many different 4 x 12 cabs too, Scumback 30's in an x pattern with 75hz & 55 hz, Scumnico 15's in an x pattern with Celestion blues, Celestion Blackback 25 watters, and Celestion Gold Alnicos, and `68 Marshall w/pre-Rola 30's.
What an incredible experience, esspecially with Matt O'Ree playing an Historic `59 with Voodoo PAF's, and an all original `64 Strat.
Long story short:
Express sounded best with `68 Marshall (barely) in my opinion, which means nothing, the Scumbacks & Celestion Golds were fired up for the first time, they will become great sounding cabs, together? they blow your head off with this amp.
Liverpool sounded great with all cabinets too, but locked in with the Blackback 25's, sounded just as good as the Express with pre-Rolas,
Rocket too sounded really good on all the cabs but it was incredidle with the Scumnico 15's & Celestion Blue's -you'll never hear clean like this, totally orgasmic. As much as we like distortion, hearing clean like this would blow Mark Knophler away.
Great amps need great speakers. I hope this combination will make for some positive changes.

Re: Speaker for Rocket
My Vin 30 showed up this afternoon. I spent about 3 hours with it and the Rocket this eve and like it way better than the Gold I had in the combo cab. It has just as much chime and articulation, but has a warmth that I could never get out of the Gold. With the Gold, I was constantly fussing with the tone. It was never quite right. Too harsh, or too muddy, or whatever. With the Vin 30, even brand new, I dialed it in and just played for a few hours. It's a cool speaker... and only $100.
Re: Speaker for Rocket
Interesting that you find a V30 as your optimal speaker. Mark Fowler says the same of the V30 with a Rocket (although I'll let Mark speak for himself). FWIW, I built a jazz amp for a fellow and mated it with a V30 and it sounded absolutely amazing. Tight and warm, articulate...really a good match with the amp and a surprise since V30s don't often get associated with much but hard rock and metal.telentubes wrote:My Vin 30 showed up this afternoon. Re: Speaker for Rocket
V30's are really a very good general purpose speaker, but not every one likes them. I suspect that those who don't would feel thatvway for almost any style of music.and this who do like them would similarly be happy with them in almost all settings. Their so-called spikiness to some isnimproved presense to others.
Re: Speaker for Rocket
telentubes and colossal,
Yes my main to go to speaker is definitely the Vin 30 for a variety of amps. I find they cover the whole spectrum to me and not icepicky or over the top on treble like people have noted.
However, we all know that speaker selection is so subjective and what works for some may not work for others.
Just look at the vast variety of speaker choices apparently some kats are still chasing the magical speaker. We are very fortunate to have so many choices today compared to the 1960's or 1970s when in my area if it wasn't stock with the amp and/or cabinet the only replacements in my area were Radio Shack Tandy speakers.

On the other hand, the situation is much more expensive today because of those choices. Back then, you lived with what you had, and adjusted your amp settings
Re: Speaker for Rocket
I just tried my rocket with a 1x12 pine cabinet oval back with a 16 ohms gold. I think it sounds great and the oval back makes it retain the bass. Sounds amazing. To the people that had mentioned here that the gold is harsh, remember it needs around 100 hrs to break-in and then it can be a more realistic review.

How did the Studio 12L work for you Steve? I have used one of my 212 closed backs loaded with the Studios for some time now and dig them with a Rocket style amp.
Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!
Re: Speaker for Rocket
I have one of Anthony's British Style 1x12" Heirloom cabs, loaded with a Studio 12L. This cabinet / speaker cobination with my Rocket or even my 6V6 Rocatal sounds absoutely outstanding. The 12L is a killer speaker, and the Rocket loves it.dartanion wrote:How did the Studio 12L work for you Steve? Re: Speaker for Rocket
I'm 24 hours in with my rocket playing it through an old marshall 412 loaded with Blackback 25s. I'm an open cab guy but my 212 open back cab is all apart. I'd like to get my hands on some blues. there is so much low end i think i don't even need the closed back cab. the speakers sound great. very honky.
If anyone wants to trade I've got three pairs of blackbacks from the late 70's. i wouldn't mind grabbing some blues or golds.

More than once these amps have been referred to as "Fat Bottom Girls"... a well deserved nickname.amplifiednation wrote:... there is so much low end i think i don't even need the closed back cab...

To those showing some love for the Vintage-30: What kind of cabinets are you using?
