The Rocket uses a Vox style tonestack, 1M(A) for treble and bass, no mid control. 50pF treble capPCollen wrote:Is that REALLY a 50pF treble tone stack cap in the Rocket ? I ran those tone stack component values through the Duncan TSC, and it gives a horrendously scooped mid-range profile. Are the Bass and Mid pots Linear taper, with only the Treble pot Audio taper ?

Strat Addict, my apologies. I didn't mean to hijack this thread. In hind sight, I wouldn't have any hesitation in building this amp. It may change your mind about using pedals, so be warned. You'll want to buy some new ones or start building them............

Thanks, everyone, I feel much better with my decision now. CapnCrunch helped me alot. I'll prob just set it up with some hair and using my picking to get clean and if I want a lead boost, I can just kick on a pedal.
How about speaker choices? I know I'm going to be using a 2x12 Cab. I thought about a Weber 30w Blue and a Celestion Greenback, thoughts?

I'm going the very same route myself for the next one, Mark. While I love the smooth sound of my Edcor pt rocket, I can't help but think the higher voltage will = a little more headroom. And the 260/290 switch is cool. I might even try a PIG (phase inverter gain) pot in the next one. I played around with it some on my last one and it yielded some very interesting tones. But, my minimalist client decided he didn't want another knob.M Fowler wrote:Captain thanks for the reply.
I had used the 240-0-240 Edcor and the amp sounds great but I am going to up the voltage on a new Rocket build to a switchable 260/300 to see how I like that.

Re: Last Minute Doubts...now asking about speakers on 2nd page
I haven't played this amp with ton of speakers, but have found that it changes character drastically depending on speaker and cab type. I have a 65Amps 2x12 open back with an Alnico Gold and a G12H30. I also play this amp through 4x12 closed back with Greenbacks. The amp sounds totally different through these cabs. I built a 2x12 cab specifically for this amp and will load it with alnico 30w Weber Bluedog and a 30W Weber Silver bell. (I have them on hand)strat_addict wrote: How about speaker choices? I don't think you can go wrong with this amp with an open back 2x12 with alnico G12 flavored speakers. Rawnster might chime in with his experience with Scumbacks and the Fanes. I've heard they are both awesome with this amp, though I haven't had the $$ to try them. I'd like to though.
My personal favorite so far, is to set the amp pretty clean, maybe just a small hint of OD from the amp. Plug in my old Tele, and run it into the 4x12 without the attenuator. I prefer the closed back with Greenbacks for clean stuff. The open back cab with alnico, is great clean or dirty, but less "hi-fi" if that makes sense.
I think the Weber blue and a Greenback would be a fine combo, but a g12H30 might be better in that combination (more low end to balance out the blue). Have fun experimenting.

Everything sounds good to me guys
I am always interested in building pedals even though I don't have to use them on gigs anymore but there still fun to build and have around.
Adding the boost switch is a great way to add more functions to the Rocket.
For even more fun try a four 6L6 Rocket reverb out for size, I really like that amp even better than my Four EL84 version and two 6L6 version. Of course its not the jingle or chime of a true Vox.

Yeah, thats sounds good; I read up on it and it seems like it would work well with a blue.CapnCrunch wrote:a g12H30 might be better in that combination (more low end to balance out the blue)

I like to run a G12H30 paired with Green back 25w open back.
But lately I gig with a 412 stereo cab so I can run two amps. Its loaded with one newer Vin30, one old English Vin 30 and Two G12H30.

I'm using Scumbacks in an Avatar Contemporary 2 x 12. Great speakers.

Beating the Fane AXA drum again. It's fantastic with the Rocket circuit.
A little more "in your face rock-n-roll", a couple of scumback M-75's are the ticket.

Have to agree with Ron here. I was fortunate enough to hear his build through both the AXA and the Scumback. Both are a great match to the rocket.
I have an M75 but I am a little more rock and roll. If I remember the Fane is very effiecient if that is important to you.

Rocket Build
Strat Addict,
I realize you stated that you wanted to be able to roll back your guitar volume for cleans; however, may I suggest you use a pedal for your leads?
While the Rocket has a wonderful cranked clean sound I think what makes the amp really nice is how quiet it is even with the volume dimed. It takes pedals really really well.
In other words (as stated earlier by others) build it stock. Play it. Get used to it. Then before modding it maybe try a couple of nice pedals in front of it for your lead tone.
Anyways Just my humble opinion. Also I only skimmed through the thread so I apologize if this suggestion was already mentioned.
Good luck,
Steve

Re: Rocket Build
Its been mentioned a little but you guys have convinced to go with that route. If there's something I want to change a few months down the road, I might, we'll see.sst4270 wrote:Strat Addict,
