Rooster - I read your initial post a couples times and don't get the Class A reference.

Are you just talking 'bout running the output tubes with cathode bias?

If so, check 'round and you'll see that there are folks here that have even implemented bias switching - between fixed bias and cathode bias. I'll leave it to you to figure out if that's what you're after.

Try the Rocket pre with a pair of KT66s running Rocket to Express voltages - low noise, very versatile.

I'm taking a crack at a class A amp express-ish amp as we speak. I'm going to be using a single KT88 and 20watt SE OT. I'm think going to try (with my very limited knowledge) switchable fixed/cathode bias at first to see what happens. I'll be sure and report my results.
