Hi everyone..
I am starting a TW build with VVR2 and also have a Scumback M75 65watts speaker on the way... Only bought one speaker because I dont what this thing to be too loud...
Now, I am a bit undecided on what cabinet would be better.. Should I make a 1x12 closed back cabinet or use the speaker in the top position of a vertical 2x12, which would result in a detuned cab..
Keep in mind I plan to put a VVR in the amp to be able to play at lower volume and still have some of that TW OD!... So what design do you think would give me the best sound...?... Even tough I know it will never sound like the 4x12 cab Glen is using in his vids, I would like the sound to get as close as possible, which is why I went with the Scumback at first..
Thanks!!!
Hugues

I have a 1x12 with the same exact speaker and it does sound nice! Mine is in a Gallien Krueger extension cab, that's barely bigger than the cardboard box the speaker came in. Very low efficiency, but works well miked up for what it is. However with the Trainwreck you'll probably always want more bass until the time comes that you get a nice 4x12. On that mind set, you could build the detuned 2x12 but plan on later possibly getting a 2nd speaker which should give you even better lows. Yes, even though I agree with you that just one speaker will keep the volume down you will still probably be taming it down in other ways regardless. I prefer an attenuator to get the entire amp pushing, but that's just me.

A friend of mine just built a " detuned " 1x12 cabinet. I was underwhelmed by the sound and he was disappointed as well. I would opt for an EV TL806 design or a good open back. They are all ported, just different tunings. You could do the open back with a removable panel to make it a closed back. Or a Dumble style back port on the open back cab.
You really should consider the EV design though, it is quite good.

While I'm using a 2x12 closed back cab, I've had a pair of M-75 65 watters installed now for about 3 weeks. Great speakers!!!
Just thought I'd share.

I have a 1x12 cabinet with an M75 65W in it and the Trainwreck amps are still brutally loud with it unattenuated!
A 4x12 with M75 25Ws doesn't sound an awful lot louder.

Wow.. Thanks for all the info guys..
Glen: Dis you ever make a clip where you use that 1x12 instead of your usual 4x12?.. That would be very interesting.... I am thinking the same thing as you suggest regarding the detuned 2x12.. It could give me room to grow, but at the same time, maybe I"ll have more enough with the 1x12 which would add the added benefit of portability...
Billyz: You really got my curiosity going with those Thiele cabs... It reaaly sounds interesting.. Is it an open or closed cab design.. It is not too clear from the schematics I found on the web... I tought that a closed back would give me a tighter bass response.. Which is what I am shooting for.. Also, many people here recommend the closed back design for a Trainwreck..
Paulster: What?? a 1x12 is not far from a 4x12 volume-wise??.. wow...
Also, as I said, I want to be able to use the amp at more manageable sound levels, and I am also building an Airbrake... Don't know yet if I will integrate the VVR right away or wait to try with the attenuator first...
Argh... So many choices...!!! (Well, I guess it is part of the fun, but man, I wjust want to make the best decision!...hehe)..
Thanks again guys!!

Re: Scumback M75 on the way.. Now a 1x12 or a 2x12 Detuned?...
I have a Mesa Thiele port cab and nothing seems to sound all that great in it. I've tried EV, prerola G12H, Vintage 30, Heritage G12M 20, and several reissue Jensens. I've also tried blocking the port and sealing it up, and putting open back panels on it. Still, it's a great size but in the end I'll probably let it go some day.
My 4x12 w/M75 25 watters is much louder than my current (modded Gallien Krueger) 1x12 w/M75 65 watt. Alot of it probably has to do with the tiny sealed 1x12 cab that's much smaller than the Mesa 1x12. I don't have any clips this cab. However a couple months back I posted some Youtube clips from '92 or so with my original Liverpool into a Randall 1x12 with a Vintage 30. I can't remember if the cab was open back or sealed as at some point in it's life I changed it over. It was a cheap particle board cab that worked OK if you miked it and used a ton of EQ.
I came up with one trick I use with my 1x12 when I do guitar clinics. I mic the 1x12, but also take the 2nd speaker jack and run that though a low pass filter and a passive pad down to line level. Then I run that into the PA for sub lows. Once that's mixed with the miced up 1x12 for mids and highs it sounds really big and amazingly natural. It seems a direct signal IF only used for deep lows is quite usable and gives you that low octave missing in a 1x12.

Re: Scumback M75 on the way.. Now a 1x12 or a 2x12 Detuned?...
Thanks again Glen for your insight.. I was starting to consider the TL806 design, but I will listen to your advice as, after all, it is after watching your vids that I went for a TW..
..
The 2x12 detuned really tempts me, but I know it boosts volume which is a bit contrary to what I want to achieve..
For now, my choice is to emulate the Mesa 1x12 Widebody cab... The only thing that I would do different is make it convertible, so I can use it as an open back as it is right now or make it a closed back.. Since it has a bit more inside volume than a 'standard' 1x12, I would think that the speaker will be able to move a bit more air, and maybe have greater bass.. And the convertible back will let me get the best of both worlds, or at leat, let me try it..
..
Now, the thing is to see if that will still be my choice tomorrow, as I am still on the verge!..
