geetarpicker video/sound bytes

Post by M Fowler »

I have to say that I was wrong when I told Glen Kuykendall that I need to be present to appreciate that his original Trainwreck Express. I said that I could not appreciate the tone through computer speakers or head phones.

I was completely wrong, sorry Glen.

I recently listened to all that I could find on youtube of Glen's playing and he has such good chops and the tone coming off that Express through the Marshall 412 (Celestion 25w green backs I think) was fantastic. It helps to have the nice guitars he has but Glen you are one talented player and I could never play that good in a million years. But I am not stopping, so people will have to live with my style. :D

The video clips have me convinced that I need to start over on a TW build. I have not build the Express but I did build the Liverpool and Rocket. I want to have a professionally build Larry Mann or some one's Maple cab and find some vintage parts to build a correct TW express. If it takes me years so what the end result is it has to have that sound. Will be searching for board material, flea clips, sockets, caps, resistors, pots, and trannies.

Thanks Glen

Thanks for the post! I really appreciate it.

Youtube does dumb down the fidelity to marginal quality mono MP3 audio. Still, I try to optimize things the best I can before I upload the videos. However some folks want better quality transfers than you can get with Youtube, so hopefully they find my CD to their liking.

I think for my next video I'll feature my old Les Paul with my Express, in a band context to tracks. I have a new song with alot of room for slide so that will be fun.

I'm always glad to help out here!

Glen, FWIW, you can add &fmt=18 to the end of your youtube link and get stereo, at least you could last I checked. It doesn't help if someone stumbles upon your page through youtube, but when you provide someone with a link you can give 'em the stereo version.

I would love to hear your playing in a live gig situation with a band. Those videos are always magical. I can understand if you want to take one of your clones rather than your original, but it would be great to hear and see. Think about it.

Since I moved to Nashville about 10 years ago I was just about forced to go with a pedal board setup for alot of my sideman gigs. Mainly as alot of the gigs are fly dates with rental backline. Usually that would be a Fender reissue Twin reverb or Hotrod Deluxe. Also so many of the soundmen are asleep and expect you to totally control the levels from your volume pedal. So, in the last few years I've used a pedal board setup either with a '64 Fender Deluxe, or a '68 Marshall Superbass 100 for bigger clubs and/or outdoor shows. That is when I'm able to bring my own gear...

Recently I started a new band specifically to play locally in Nashville, TN and we are called "GK Parks", kind of a combo of the singer and I's names. I'm the band leader for the most part of this 4 piece band, and it's my PA so you can bet the guitar will be in the mix! I'll be exclusively using my pair of Express clones I built, a UA attenuator, a 4x12 w/scumbacks, and almost as importantly my own PA which I spent the last 2 months putting together. My only pedal will be a Turbo Tuner, so it's back to working the guitar knobs onstage which I miss. We plan to do a couple/three of my instrumentals, but it will mostly be classic rock covers with some newer stuff thrown in. Hopefully we may also get out of town and play the "Dallas Vintage guitar show" and possibly other places, but it will mostly be "in town" stuff for fun. We are just starting to schedule bookings and I'll keep my Myspace page updated with the latest.

This all sounds good Glen and it would be a hoot to see you guys live. If you do the Dallas show let us know as I may be able to get my wife to setup a business travel to Austin and Dallas area. She was just in Austin for a Marketing Summit and I stayed home on that trip.

I can see it now.. Amp Garage group event....beers, bullshit, burgers...all the good stuff....

Seriously Glen, if you get this set up, I'll help set up some sort of get together with all whom live in the area and those who will make the trek to DFW...

For those who don't know, the Dallas show is one of the better events on the vintage instrument circuit... and a cheap afternoon out with great entertainment.

When is the Dallas show? I just moved here (Las Colinas) from Albuquerque. Been building Dumble style stuff and finally decided to check out the TW stuff the other day. Now I want to build one. Just need one more amp I guess. I also stumbled across Glen's youtube stuff the other day. Man what a player you are. Wish I had a fraction of the chops. Good work.
