Hammond 12AU7A tubes

Post by Plague »

My Hammond 12ax7 just went bad in my liverpool.

What are the 12Au7a's like?

What are some other pre-amp tube recommendations you guys have?

Thanks

By the way, I have 2 12Au7a's that my builder gave me. Not sure if I should try them or not.

12au7's are very different both gain and current wise. While they have the same pin-out, they will sound quite different. This might help you:

Thats chart is awesome! Thanks.

Should I get three of the same?

Or buy 1 tung-sol, 1 mullard, and one tung-sol gold and interchange them to see what sounds best?

Never done this before. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

What did you end up doing/going with, and in what order? Does it sound as good as before?

Learned a bunch about old tubes since this thread!!

Here is where I ended up...

V1 Tungsram 12ax7
V2 GE Electric 12ax7
V3 Mullard 12ax7

If you would like to hear the difference listen to the 2nd track on our myspace player. I put a couple minutes up of a jam/song were writing with the new tube arrangement...

listen to "Tread On Disaster" New tube arrangement...

"Gateway" is the old arrangement of tubes.
