Liverpool w/ VVR Complete - Cab Photos added - Clips Added

Post by sst4270 »

Just fired up my liverpool build. I'm posting some photos and maybe Dana or Alan can help me with a problem I'm having...
I implemented Dana's VVR circuitry into this amp. At full power the amp is dead quiet. No hum. Only the obligatory hi-gain hiss... IT SOUNDS BEAUTIFUL. I'm delivering it to its owner tomorrow night for a trial run and plan to record. So I'll have some clips for you soon.
Now.. The problem: as I dial back the power some very undesireable background noise occurs. I don't have a scope to analyze it, but I can best describe it as a combination of two noises overlayed upon each other. The first noise I would liken to the sound of a reverb spring being tapped randomly in the background. The second noise on top of the first noise is like a swirling synthesizer sound.
This background noise only occurs when I dial in the VVR. It gets louder the more I dial back the power. Any comments would be welcome.
Thanks all!

Steve

I assume you've pulled the NFB wire up and out of the way. It actually runs parallel to the mosfet wiring for an inch or so. I just run it straight across the chassis to the pot.

Problem Fixed...

Post by sst4270 »

I tried moving the NFB wire... No difference.

Swapped many V1 tubes... found a JJ that works well.
AND grounded Volume and Treble pot cases. (that seemed to have the greatest effect.)

Pretty much all the noise that occurred when dialing in the VVR is gone.
I've still got the littlest bit of oscillation at high volume levels. I may try adding that "optional" resistor between the Volume pot and V1,pin 2.

Will post clips and finished product photos soon. Wait till you see the cabinet. It's coming out pretty nicely if I do say so...

That has to be one of the most professional looking builds I've seen yet!

I take it you're a photographer?

Clips as promised...

Post by sst4270 »

I've attached a couple of clips of the show last night.
You're listening to a band out of Annapolis, MD:
Michael McHenry & the Tribe.
I built Laura for him. I think after hearing the clips you'll agree he deserves her.

Room: Rams Head Tavern Annapolis, MD Basement bar
Recording: Audio-Techinica Pro24 stereo mic>M-Audio Microtrack 24/96>WAV Converted to mp3 format for upload. Zero post processing

Gear: Fender Tele>Several pedals (yes pedals) including a Wah, Memory Man, Boss DD-5, various distortion pedals, etc... >Laura>2X10 cab I built to accompany Laura. It contains 2 - Jensen P10Q AlNiCo drivers.

Steve

One last thing(s)

Post by sst4270 »

Thanks for all the compliments. I truly appreciate it.

Finally,
I found that a great reduction in hum came about when I screwed down a double copper faced pc board to the cabinet under the aluminum chassis. It runs the whole width of the chassis. I then soldered a wire to the board and looped it around one of the attachment screws. This of course acts as a shield as so many of you have mentioned in previous posts. I just found the copper shield worked better. It's what most mfrs use to shield electronics from EMI and RFI when little else can be done. As is the case with these amps when we're trying to replicate a particular layout.

Sincerely,

Steve

Thanks for the tip, Steve.

Now if I can only do this for my single coils.

Great, I had finally settled on building an Express, now I have to start all over again.

Great looking work and great clips as well.
