Best 12" speaker for a Trainwreck combo

Post by harryk »

I have built one Twreck head ans one Liverpool head and now planning to make one Express open back combo. To my mind Express sounds best with closed back cabin with at least 2x12" speakers. Now I would like to have an amp which is suitable for small gigs and should be lighweight. By now I have experiences of open back 1x12" speakers with Red Fand and Celestion Gold speakers which suit very well to Fender and Vox world. Any opinions which element should be best to this Express combo. Harry

I believe Ken designed the TW amps around 4X12 with 25 watt greenbacks. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

No you're right. But you can use these amps with many different speakers. I use a 2x12 oval back combo. A Weber Blue Dog, and a Weber Silver Bell. Both 16ohms 30watt. Great blues jam/rock sound.

They were a little bright in the beginning but are darkening up nicely. But I also put a VOX cut control to darken the amp when needed.

Everyone loves this amp when I bring it to the jams.

I built a wreck style combo with a Weber blue dog, I think it sounds great. The 1-12" speaker knocks the volume down a bit.

I use a Weber British Series 12M with my Express style amp. I have one 1 x 12 cab, and a 2 x 12. This is a great speaker for taming some of the high end TW inspired amps are known for.

Hi Harry,
I have two Wreck clones, an Express and a Liverpool. They are both really bright-sounding amps. I originally played them through a 212 with a G12H30/ Vintage 30 combo. That was far too bright to my ears. Next, I tried a Marshall 412 with Greenbacks. Sounded great, but was deafening. I went back to the 212 and replaced the Vintage 30 with a Weber alnico Silver Bell. Now, I've found sonic nirvana. :)

Hope this helps,
Brad

:) Is this Weber Alnico Bell smilar to Celestion Blue or Gold? Because I live in Finland, Weber is not very common here. They are also very expensive because only one company brings them here. I get all models of Celestion and Eminence speakers easily with reasonable costs. I know how Express works with a closed back cabinet but now I need a good speaker solution to a open back 1x12" Express combo. Maybe I first try Celestion Gold because I happen to have one already. I use mine with either a 2x12 loaded with V30's, a 2x12 loaded with Emi Private Jacks, or a 4x12 loaded with a pair of JBL's and a pair of older Celestion 75's.

The Private Jacks might be a nice choice since they handle 50 watts each. In a 1x12, you need a 50 watt speaker unless you mod the TW for lower output or use an attenuator. The greenback style speaker really works well with these amps.

The Weber Blue Dog is a blue. The Silver bell has more bass and less high end but similar in character.

I am planning to make a 1x12" open back Twreck Express combo with 6V6 tubes. I try to make a lightweight amp which is also physically as small as possible. I have tried 2 x Greenbacks in open back cabin but I did not like that sound. To my mind they are better in closed back cabins. Scumbacks are difficult to import to Finland where I live. I know that Ken aimed Express to be used with 4x12" cabin, but the older you get, the more you appreciate light amps when gigging. Harry

Harry,
The Weber Alnico Silver Bell is a little darker sounding than the Blue Dogs, or either of the Celestions. Like I said, I wanted that one to tame the high frequencies a little. Works perfectly, and it has all of the smooth distortion that alnicos are known for.

Do you have any idea if Weber Alnico Silver Bell is nearby Celestion Gold or Eminence Red Fang soundwise? That Silver Bell darker sound could tame Express brightness. Harry
