express bass and treble pots

Post by lewilson »

Anyone experiment with 250k pots in an express? I see some schematics floating around that use them instead of the 1 megs.

Um, yes, that's me for one. If you get into tone atacks, and I do, the typical TW Express tone stack is kinda tweed Bassman or Marshall Plexi, with the exception of the 500pf treble cap which would be 250pf. So a tad darker then in the stack. But since there is more gain with the TW, it all gets brighter, and then the Presence control can make it brighter still. So, a circuit that is similar in looks at some level, but very different because of the gain structure...

Anyway, I am running the 250K/25K/500K T-M-B stack in my version, which was more to your question. You might not believe it but this stack has less gain that the 'correct' version. And it works very well here I think. Og course the saving grace of any tone stack that has a 500pf treble cap is a Presence control, and only true if this control actually works. Which it does, and better in this amp than anything I have ever played. It behaves far better than the almost identical circuit in the Bassman, for example. So here, once again, it is the different gain stage that makes this a different critter.

Ah, what else can I add? I think either tone stack will perform very well here, but just remember to FORGET how you might have looked at a Presence control in the past. Using it on this amp, you can go from SRV to deep shades of Jimi with ease. Finally, I have never played an amp that has inspired me as much as this amp. It may be perfect - but for this to be true, you have to have some decent speakers, a decent gtr, and maybe more importantly, you have to LEARN the controls! It is all there!!!!! 8)

Hmm. I wrote you the most thought out long winded post ever - and then it disappeared.

So let me give you the highlights....

"........If your musical soul was like warm bread, fresh from the oven, then the Express is the sweetest honey ever made....

It is a Channeling amp, channeling up the tones of all my mentors and heroes....."

Eh, there was so much!!!!!!!!!! Lost forever!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I'm done for the night. I play Strats mostly, but I own a few Teles, and a few LPs. They are all bright gtrs, BTW. All my LPs run with ABR-1 bridges, aluminum TPs, steel studs, and 500K pots - on purpose.
What settings work for the Strats work for the other gtrs. Sorry to cut this short, but I gotta go.........
