Solid Cloth Wire VS Stranded, Silver Plated Teflon Wire

Post by DaveWell »

Hi everyone !

I build a Express..

I Already get both of the wire mentioned , but... Still scratch my head a little about wire to use.

I do like the 20 Ga. Stranded, Silver Plated, Aerospace Grade, Teflon Wire

What will you use ? And Why ?

Thanks !

As I am usually the oddball,I hate the Teflon, and I love the cloth pushback wire. I'm finishing up another Rocket type amp that I used the cloth wire in, and it works well, stays put and just easy to use. Oh,, no stripping the wire either..:)

I'll post some pics of it when its finished.

Great !

Thanks for your opinion.

But about performance and conductivity ?

IS one better to avoid RF?

The cloth type wire you posted the link to is not what I was using. That type I do have some, but it has to be stripped. and its a thicker coating.I think it was someones way of trying to better the old wire. I'm using the old type like was in the fenders of old.

Probably a million debates of what is best or better. That space grade probably is tough,as it has to go in space.

You can look at many types. I think too, the layout is important.
All kinds or types of wire will work well if used the right way.

I've used about every type of wire in over a dozen amps I've built in the last decade. The cloth covered wire with pvc insulation inside is a pita to strip I'll never use it again. It stays where you put it though, as it is quite stiff. Teflon is also difficult to strip with regular wire strippers, the 20 ga. strips fairly easily with my radioshack automatic strippers. There are special wire strippers for teflon wire which are very expensive. The silver coated teflon wire tins like a dream!

Old style push back cloth covered wire is getting hard to find. I think Doug Hoffman sells it. It is by far the easiest quickest wire to use as no stripping of insulation is necessary, nor is it necessary to tin the wire like stranded wire before crimping and soldering This can save a great deal of time in assembly. Some people claim the cloth covered wire sounds the best as there are no resonances caused by the insulation. I've never noticed any difference in sound caused by the wire used. That does not mean that you won't.

PVC solid core wire is also very easy to use and is the least expensive.

The only downside to the solid core wire is that it can fatigue and break if you bend it too many times in the same spot.
