Anybody familiar with the Celestion G12-70? I picked up one kinda cheap to use in a nephew's wreck build. It's pre Rola. Does it like an open or closed back or either? I suspect I'll make it just like my other 12" cabs; that is to say it will measure like a D 1-12" cab, only in the '50s Fender style. 5/16" ply baffle, pine sides and top, 1/4" ply back. Oval or no cutout or convertible.
The four ohm bit is kinda complicated. I intended to make it a 6V6 amp and use a 20 watt 5.25K/4 ohm OT that I had laying around. But the kid is 14 and scary good so I might use a 6.6K 35 watt OT and get the thing just as close to real as I can. That OT has 4/8/16 ohm taps. I'll get a different speaker if y'all don't think much of the G12-70. I put one of those Chinese Vintage 30's (warehouse speakers) in my son's amp and I gotta say, it didn't sound too bad. I ain't buyin' nobody's nephew no Alnico blue though.
Ramble ramble, sorry.

Re: 4 ohm G12-70
I converted a blackface Vibrolux to 1-12" about 25 years ago and the only 4 ohm Celestion I could find was a G12-70, OEM from Marshall. I guess they used it in one of their solid state combos. It was way too bright; I converted back to two tens. On the other hand, I did put a G12-70 in a narrow panel tweed Deluxe with a sagging Jensen I wanted to preserve. I tried every speaker I could get my hands on, including the alnico blue that Celestion had just reissued, and the amp seemed grainy and dark. The G12-70 was my last choice because I had had such a strong negative reaction in the BF circuit. It was perfect in the tweed Deluxe. Maybe it will work well in your application with 6V6s.

Re: G12M-70
Well that's encouraging Rocknroll. I wouldn't want an overly bright speaker on a wreck. But maybe it's just a silly question. Like you said, hook it up and see what it sounds like. I've already decided that he's gonna get a multitap OT, so I've got lots of choice.roknroll wrote:As we all know, sound is in the ear of the beholder, but my opinion is the 70 is a dark sounding speaker.

thanks guys
