How about a 40,000 year old Wreck cabinet...

Post by Distortion »

How about some 40,000 year old Kauri wood for a Wreck cabinet..

I knew the KF Memorial amp had a cabinet built with Kauri but until I received this wood I had never seen any in person.
Funny thing is it doesn't look 40,000 years old.. :D

Very interesting wood to work with and it likes to be sanded with very fine grits.
This cabinet was sanded all the way up to 1500 grit. It is a lot of work but the results are worth it.
This wood was sourced from New Zealand and via Australia on to me in Tennessee. It is just about ready to fly back to Australia to its new home..
Possibly I can go and visit it some day..

The cabinet turned out extremely well and I thought some of you wood lovers might like to see how it turned out..

As usual your cabinet rules! I like the wood backplate, now you just need ebony dymo labels! Phil

WoW Larry

You have excelled yourself with this one!

I wish it were mine, Hey wait a minute, it is mine, he he.

This is Master Craftsmanship at it's finest,

You can you see why I sent the Kauri wood from Australia to Larry

no one else could be trusted with such an outcome as this.

Looks like Larry might have to do more rear plates as well now.

As for the labels, I might get them done with a lazer cutter.

Regards, Craig. :D :D :D

Distortion,
That's amazing. How do I get a quote for one of your cabs? Do you have a website?
Thanks

Hey guys, thanks for the nice comments.
Craig is getting a very nice cabinet..
I must admit this particular wood took forever to sand..It was almost like sanding petrified wood. But that hardness really seems to be the major factor in its sheen. The pictures shown are just the wood and stain. The cabinet has no lacquer or wax applied.

Paul86, if you want to shoot me an email or pm we can discuss what you are looking for.

I mean it looks really special, yet a little deceiving as it just doesn't look 40000 years old, but I did check on the web, and I've seen other examples of that type of kauri, I just ignored it's existance, really cool.

It is a wonder how some one with such skill level can take something and make something so beautiful. Thank you for the pics, it is something to strive for in the next build... if one is so fortuneate to work with such woods.
