6v6 mini wreck ?

hi all,
I'm thinking about building a mini wreck at some point in the future
and I have some questions:

isn't a se el86/84 a bit too much on the treble side for a wreck preamp?

wouldn't it be a bit more on the train wreck side with one 6v6 instead of the el86 / el84?

has anybody tried a derailment kind of amp with a 6v6?

My MiniWreck supports a single power tube, which can be either an EL84, a 6V6 or a 6L6. It has a 9 pin socket and and 8 pin socket to support this (one at a time of course). You can also use an EL34, but the power trannie I have been using might e a little small for that tube from a current perspective. The next builds will use a beefier PT to better support the EL34.

I find the 6V6 to be my favorite tube in this amp, with the EL84 as a close second. It's not so much a matter of brightness, but rather the character of the crunch. Actually, the MiniWreck is not nearly as bright as the Express, probably due to the lack of a PI (resulting in less overall gain), so being overly bright is not an issue for me.

thanks for that info!

brings me to another idea;

couldn't the PI stage be simulated with the unused 12ax7 half
and how would you bias the stage then?

I decided not to use the unused stage, because I wanted the preamp to more closely resemblethe Express. But there is no reason you couldn't have a 4th stage in the amp. You could arrange it like the 3rd stage = 10k and no cap I suppose, or use alligator clips and do some experimenting.

what would happen if you add a 470ohm resistor between the catode and the 10k resistor and than add a 1m resistor from that connection to grid, just like a half PI stage.

would that make the stage act more like the PI or is that nonsense?

and couldn't than also be the negativ feedback and prescence control be added just like on a real wreck?
