AC30 choke on an Express

Post by Thiago.zanato »

I have a choke laying around here for my AC30 clone and I was wondering if I could try it on the express. It's a Mercury Magnetics choke. The Express sounds awesome but I want to try a choke on it just out of curiosity.
Are there any specs I should be worried about matching?

thanks ;)

I don't have any specs but I put a 10H choke in my express and I love it! Just remove the power resistor and replace it with the choke. I think you'll be amazed at the smooth but subtle change it makes!

I think the AC30 choke is around 7 or 8 H , does it make a lot of difference?

The Vox spec is 10H to 20H for AC30 chokes. Nice and vague! I'd guess the MM choke falls somewhere in this range.

I just did it, and it sounded, hummm... GREAT!
I guess I'm not a over the top out-of control high gain guy, and even though it was all there, the choke smoothed out the gain very nicely, preserving the dynamics. It's a subtle difference, it feels a more balanced. I also changed the PI tail resistor to a 22K, just like I did with my 2 other wrecks, big improvement too. It's incredible how this amp loathes pedals. Whatever I put in front of it causes it to squeal and scream ( I don;t miss pedals with this amp, so it doesn't really matter).
I'd like to thank the guys that tried the choke and recommended it here in the board ;)
