PVC caps... where? Which?
Ok initially I was thinking about going with 150 series mallorys for my express clone, and actually I still am, but while I'm at it why not try both types and make a fair comparison in the same amp, with the same setup.
Problem is those PVC buggers are not the easiest to find, especially here in europe, so any brands/cap types you guys can sugest for pvc replacements, and/or places where to get them would be highly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
use a film foil type versus a metallized, which is what a 150 is.

Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
I knew 150's were metalized polyprop, but is film foil supposed to be the same as those mallory pvc caps?
Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
Try Sprague 6PS orange drops. (Not the same as 715's) I believe they're very close to the Mallory PVC's.

mallory pvc are film foil. you can judge by the size. quite a difference.

Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
Would these be the type of cap similar to Mallory PVC's?

BTW, I found a large amount of Mallory PVC caps but sadly, they are .068uF...
Cheers,
Stephane.

Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
If somebody MUST have them, I might have a few sets to sell for express or liverpool.
Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
IIRC the PVC are polyester film foil like the 418p 225p 6PS
there is an old discussion somewhere on this forum about these caps
715 & 716 are polypropylene film foil
Farnell France provide LCR axial polyprop film foil (not sure they aren't metallized but they are big) in the 1000v&1500v rating and they are working great in two amps i've built (none of them is a express though)
Banzai in germany will try to provide 418p 225p or 6PS in the 600v range but not before october
some like the Xicon MPP and they are available & cheap....
Lastwinj we are waiting for your resistor/cap shootout results

Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
Try a:
- KT type, polyester film & foil like PVC.
- MTK type Metallized polyester for example MKT1813 cheap and warm sound.

Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
Hey there
I have ordered Cornell-Dubilier PVC series caps from Allied Electronics. If I'm understanding correctly, C.D. makes Mallory, so....equivalent? Hopefully I'll find out!
Allied also stocks the Mallory TC75 and TC78 caps for the power supply.
Have a great day!

Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!
Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
I just replaced my Mallory 150's with Mallory PVC's. The PVC's were a noticeable improvement. I highly recommend the effort to find them. BTW, the Mallory 150's replaced the OD715's. That was an improvement also.
Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
I'm going to do the build with mallory's 150 for starters, if I have the time I'll try it out with some different caps later... But while I'm at it I must add that the posts left me a bit confused...
What are PVC mallory's after all, are they film foil, tin foil...???
How would a jensen paper in oil cap behave in this circuit?
Mostly I figure mallory's will fo fine, but I see all these remarks about PVC's, so I'd just like to know what to get that is close to PVC's, I'm building two of these, mine will begin with mallory's for sure, but the other amp I'm building is for a friend and I'm sure he'll be wanting to get as close to the real amp as possible...
so could anyone enlighten me as regarding caps...

Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
hi riscado,
PVC mallories are polyester film and foil, and an essential component in the sound of this amp. They aren't as bright as 150's, which will be accentuated in this amp. Everything matters when building one of Ken's monsters!

Re: PVC caps... where? Which?
ok marc, thanks for clearing that out for me...
either way I'll build two amps, so one (mine) will have 150's and the other will use the polyester caps, it'll be a good way for testing both caps, if I like the polyester ones better I'll end up changing them in my amp later on!
Thanks for the help
