Effect of tubes on sound in a liver pool ?

Post by gtrcollectr »

I am thinking of playing around with the tubes in my liverpool and was going to try a 7025 in V2 to tame some of the noise and maybe a 5751 in the PI.

Has anybody tried this and what was your result?

Thanks,
Todd

The old "Which tubes for my amp" discussion revisited.

Your best bet to "tame the noise" is to invest in a small supply of NOS 12AX7s and perhaps 7025s. To my ears there's no difference noise-wise between "ordinary" 12AX7s and the supposedly lower noise 7025, however, there's a HUGE difference between quality NOS and anything from new production. JJ Tesla in particular has been noisy lately. It's a matter of selecting the least noisy of as many tubes as you have available.

The lower gain 5751 will help reduce noise slightly especially if you use premium NOS specimens.

Final answer... try it, see if you like it.

I put some 12ax7-EH in v1-v2 and it made a huge difference in the noise.....this amp is very quiet now. It still has a bit of hiss but that seems to be very normal for any high gain amp.

For what its worth I had Tung Sols in there and it sounded killer but was noisy. I swapped in various tubes in V1-V2 and there was no difference until the EH's, I would recommend them highly to tame a noisy amp.

I may still try the NOS tubes but I will play with these for a while......
