Can someone direct me to...lower gain mods
I know the liverpool is a hi-gain amp but looking to clean one up a bit.
I think I found my answer..just to make sure, lowering the resistor to ground in the cap/resistor combo going into the 3rd stage will lower the gain of the amp right? So if I have a 120k in there now and replace it with a 56k or 68k it should lower it a bit, right?

Re: Can someone direct me to...lower gain mods
You could do a split plate load resistor on the second stage. I do that toi my Express amps and love the results. I also use a 12AT7 for V3 (PI), which you could try as well.

What do you use for the split load plate values?sliberty wrote:You could do a split plate load resistor on the second stage. I do that to my Express amps and love the results. I also use a 12AT7 for V3 (PI), which you could try as well.

I used 22k and 82k, but of course mine is an Express, and my taste might be different than yours. Start with a pair of 47k resistors, and hen adjust from here to taste.

How does it work, lower resistor on the plate side of the split, lower voltage out? Is 47k/47k half of the output?

Tubes are an easy way if you have them around. It is also easy to undo....
Changing R7 down to 68k might surprise you how gainy it still is. Don't forget to consider the RC effect and adjust C8 if you want to maintain a similar response.
The split load does give you options

Gonna do the 22k/82k split on 2nd gain stage plate and lower the 120k between the 2nd and 3rd gain stage to 68k. Then I'll adjust the cap between 2nd and 3rd. See where that gets me
 Thanks guys!

Re: Can someone direct me to...lower gain mods
Thanks sliberty, I knew the 22k/82k is used on one of the Komet amps ...
BTW, the 22k goes on the HV supply and the 82k goes on the plate.
You'll need at least a 50% split (attenuation) 47k/47k to have any effect ...
With the 82k/22k turned around so the 82k is on the HV supply and the 22k on the plate you won't notice any difference with the ~20% attenuation.

might also change the 100k feedback resistor to a 27k and get a notch or two more on the volume control. Meaning it should clean up a bit.

The 120K value is quite high. I found the 68K to sound great and the 56K to be a bit m'eh.
Personally I'd run with the 68K resistor and the Komet style split load switch. You can even get Allyn's footswitch circuit for this arrangement as well.

Re: Can someone direct me to...lower gain mods
How about omitting the 22uf cathode bypass cap on the 2nd gain stage? That would make a noticeable difference in the gain level.

Re: Can someone direct me to...lower gain mods
This change might also have an impact on tone as the cathode cap adds gain to a range of frequencies. That may not be a bad thing, but just something to be aware of. Plus 22uF is fairly full spectrum for guitar.leadfootdriver wrote:How about omitting the 22uf cathode bypass cap on the 2nd gain stage? That would make a noticeable difference in the gain level.
Re: Can someone direct me to...lower gain mods
You're right, 22uf is fairly full spectrum for guitar, and then some. It provides gain for notes much lower than you'd ever need unless it was a bass guitar. Removing it will not change the frequency response.

Re: Can someone direct me to...lower gain mods
I suggest this because there's already a 22uf on the 1st stage. It's worth a try.

Re: Can someone direct me to...lower gain mods
Success! Thanks guys.
I added the split load 22k/82k on 2nd gain stage, 68k/.0047 instead of 120k/.0022 between 2nd and 3rd stage and lowered the feedback resistor to 47k from 100k. Just about perfect now! It sounds great..loud, clean is full and round sounding..when cranked it saturates and grinds killer..swells into feedback...quiet as a mouse. I think the little things i want from it can be had by tube and speaker choice. It does start sounding a bit hard when cranked..i'd like to soften it a bit..gonna mess around with some tubes.
