question about francesca pics

Post by rhinson »

hello there, from the schematic supplied with the pics, there is a 470k bleeder resistor in the power section. in the actual pics, there are 2 470k resistors side by side. either they are together in series or in parallel to make the bleeder resistor but i can't tell from the pic. i'm guessing parallel---i used to have a traynor 50w amp that had a big 100k bleeder resistor parallel to the final preamp filter cap (it looked to be about 5w and got really hot---a 10watter would be better). can anyone tell how these are soldered together? thanks rh

These are in series - connected to the middle bottom cap, then soldered together at the top, then soldered to a ground tag.

Also, I read this as two, 2 or 3 watt 100k resisters @5% in series for 200k total. Look at Greg's picture "Hamer018.jpg" for a better view...

brown, black, yellow, gold, yellow.

Gold is definitely the %quality rating. The additional yellow may be an aditional quality or power indicator.

hello there, thanks-----duh, i see that now. i guess i was letting my eyes see what the schematic said and not what was there! so a 5- 10w 220k resistor would be a good bleeder sub here. thanks again the good eyes. rh

Assuming this PS is basically the A0 schematic, shouldn't there be 2 bleeder resistors (or 2 series pairs)? I thought the whole point of a bleeder system was to balance a pair of capacitors connected in series to get a higher max. voltage rating (like the TW A0) schematic. This series pair, seen in the photo, fulfils the function of only 1 of a pair of bleeders - where is the other?

It's not the A0 schematic; check out the Kelly schematic. Two 40uF caps and a resistor all paralleled.
