Speaker recommendations for a Rocket-based amp?

Post by Curly »

Howdy all.

I have a custom built Rocket based amp on order, and it should be done soon.

It looks like I will likely get an Avatar vintage 2x12 cab.

As of now, I'm leaning towards a combination of either a Weber Blue Dog alnico/ Silver Bell alnico, or Blue Dog/ 1230 ceramic (G12H type).

I'm going for a Vox/ Marshall tone. Once I nail down the speaker choice, I'll probably ask Ted about power rating - likely either 30 or 50 watt versions.

What say ye gentlemen regarding these choices?

thanks kindly!!

Celestion Heritage G12-65 and AlNiCo Gold! That's my vote anyway!

I use my Rocket with either of two cabs. I have a Marshall basketweave 4-12 straight loaded with G12M-25/75hz Greenbacks, and a style-II Bluesbreaker 2-12 semi-open-back (big*11.5" deep, around 2/3 of the 4-12 dimensions) loaded with 2 Weber 30-watt alnico Blue Dogs. The 2-12 is my choice for my loud rock band, as it is a louder cab, and I'm playing with another guitarist with a 50-watt half-stack. My 4-12 with the less sensitive Greens isn't loud enough. Both sound good, but the amp really sounds different at the same settings depending on the cab choice.

thanks guys ... I appreciate it!

john, thanks ... the amp you posted had a lot to do with my choice ... mine should turn out similar to yours, so I appreciate the feedback

I'm leaning toward the Celestion Blue/ G12H combo, or a Weber Blue Dog alnico/ Silver Bell alnico combo. One advantage with Webers is that you can spec 15, 30, or 50 watt versions when you order to match the amp's power

I built an AC30 for a local player, he went with the Blue Dog/Silver Bell
combo. I also liked (more actually) the Silver Bell/G12H30-55 combo.
It will be going into my Rocket build coming soon.
