TW Express - Speaker Options (Again!)

Post by MikeSafreed »

OK, you are all probably tired of newbies to this forum asking the same old questions, but I ask that you please indulge me and let me ask the same old question one more time...

I completed the build on a TW Express, and it sounds absolutely killer. All of my testing of the completed amp was done with an open back cab (actually a Fender Tweed High-Power Twin amp cab) that is loaded with a pair of original, mint, 1972 Celestion G12M 25 watt Greenbacks. I purchased the speakers new, in 1973, and they've been carefully stored since then. Both speakers have the great "102 3" cones.

I'm an amp builder during the day and play in a working blues band on weekends. I'm anxious to take this new amp to some of our large-venue gigs. Most of my current amps are Fender-stlye, blackface-type, with open back cabs, and have mostly 10" Jensen P-series speakers. I play both Strats and and a LP Custom (that I also bought new in 1973). So, that's the basis for my personal tone. A Fender style amp through Jensen speakers.

Mojo, in North Carolina, builds all of my cabinets, so my initial inclination is to have them build me a slant-back 4-12 cab, and then load it with 2 of my G12M Greenbacks, and add a pair of Vintage 30's. I figure I'll get an early breakup from the G12M's, and maybe a little more headroom from the Vintage 30's. I'll be wiring the cab in parallel-series for a total of 16 ohms to take advantage of the full windings of the OT.

So, am I headed in the right direction, or should I just pop in another pair of G12M Greenbacks? Other suggestions...

I know this is going to be a totally different tone world for me, but I'm ready for the change. Your suggestions are welcomed...

Thanks in advance...

Suggestion use the search function and read up on other responses to this type of question. It's not a short answer.

selloutrr,

Thanks for the search tip. I just spent some time reading a couple of message strings that really helped clarify some of my speaker questions. I knew before I asked the question that speakers are very subjective - no two people hear the same thing from a speaker. I think the consensus was that the Express seems to like a quad of G12M 25 watt Greenbacks as probably the benchmark, and that many people favored the Scumback clones of the Greenbacck. My idea about the Vintage 30's probably isn't a good starting point, even when combined with a pair of G12M 25 watt Greenbacks. I'm going to contact the folks at Scumback and have a discussion with them. I already have a great relationship with everyone at Weber Speakers - I buy a lot of parts and speakers from them already - so I'll give C.J. and call and see what he recommends.

Again, thanks for pointing me ni the right direction. No sense in everyone having to answer the same old question all over again.

:D

If you are going with Weber go for C1225 with prerola doping or Legacy series with same small magnet and lower rattage.
