Express speakers...again

Post by Fischerman »

Revisiting an old topic because I think it's a very important part of the chain...I already did a search and found some decent threads on it...but didn't see much on the newer Eminence line (I'm sure I just missed it) nor the new Celestion G12-65 RIs.

I've read the Trainwreck Express amp was supposedly voiced to be played through a 4x12 with Greenbacks but I'm going to give it the ole college try at making a semi-open, oversized 2x12 work (I can make it closed-back if needed). The cabinet is a custom job (from Stone Age...also building a matching head cab) but seems to be similar to other 'oversized' 2x12 cabs (basically a mini 4x12). The back will be 3/4 closed - 1/4 open.

The two speakers I'm strongly considering are the Celestion G12-65 reissues or Eminence Tonespotters but any suggestions are welcome. Do either of these seem like a terrible match? Or a potentially great match? Obviously, the price is considerably different. The Express can lean towards the bright side and speaker selection is important. Thanks for any help.

Note: I've got a pair of Scumback 30W H75s on the way and will try them but I was thinking the H75s might go in my 4x12...wasn't sure if the H75s would have enough low end in the semi-open 2x12...even if they did I'd probably order a pair of his higher wattage speakers for a 2x12.
