Is this normal from an Express?

Post by bognermatchless »

Is it normal for the Express to have as much chime as a Vox AC 30?

I have a TBX model and I demo'd them back and forth next to each other and they have have an incredible amount of chime with my Strat.

I was playing the Express though a Celestion Gold/H75 65 watt Scumback closed back cabinet as well, which probably isn't as good for 'chime" as the two blues in the AC30.

Mind you the "Marshall" tones are lacking with this particular cabinet from the Express, which brings me to another question - does the express generally transform from an AC30 to a Marshall with the choice of speakers/cabinets? Does is transform into a Marshall with a 4X12 Greenback loaded cab?

This thing is really interesting. Never in my wildest dreams would I honestly say an EL34 amp have as much chime as the almighty Vox AC30.

Is there a reason for this? Is the pre-amp or power stage similar at all to a Vox AC30 in an Express?

It sounds like your model is not very accurate. The Trainwreck Rocket is more similar to an AC30 than the Express. The Express/Liverpool preamp is a different animal with the Liverpool having a 4-EL84 power section.

TBX model is the AC30, not the Express.

The Express was built by Richie here at TAG.

The chime you are experiencing in the Express may be due to your Strat enjoying a good design in a well-executed build.

No, they are not all that similar in topology - the AC30 and Rocket use a cathode follower-driven tone stack. The Express has it's tone stack up front.

I agree, the strat has something to do with it - but what I am surprised about is it has just as much chime as my AC30.

I guess my questions will be answered when I fire up the Express with a soon to be delievered 4X12 with greenies.

If the Express has THIS much chime, I am almost scared to fire up a Liverpool, or Rocket.
