Sean,

Yes the Rocket reacts to the guitar volume or amp volume but is much more tame then the Liverpool or Express. A very nice amp to have in the collection.

I agree with Mark and add my own two cents worth...

The Rocket and the Express are entirely different beasts in that the Rocket goes from from superb clean to sweet crunch, but isn't an over the top high gain amp. In my experience I've found they have moderate gain and you can get a sweet early breakup if you push them hard or use high output humbuckers. I prefer the Strat but lots of guys will give the thumbs up to the humbuckers as well.

By the way Mark, that amp cabinet is just obscene!

thanks,

It's a very diferent amp. Cleans nicely rolling back the volume? Not like the express, you will loose dB's like any other amp. The good thing about the rocket is the touch sensitivity, it reacts very good to controlling the attack with the right hand. When cranked (2 o'clock or more) you need more the guitar volume to clean the sound but is crunchy and never as gainy as the express. When tubed right the rocket shines for the harmonic complexity, beautiful cleans with little hair.
I love it with tele pickups and P-90's. Good too with low gain humbuckers.

Thanks for the feedback, would like to add a Rocket to the collection. I've never built an amp myself and not sure if a Rocket would be too adventurous for my first build :)

It's certainly more friendly that an Express or Liverpool. Less simple than a Champ or Tweed Deluxe.

Check RJ Guitars here at The Amp Garage for iron, chassis, or kits.

Liverpools are addictive too.
The only way I can describe playing a strat with a liverpool is like having a tiger by the tail. Over the top. A wild ride.
I smile a lot when I play mine.

The Liverpool is like Brad Paisley's dirty tele tone. It gets dirty quicker then a Rocket and then get's aggressive after that but in a very sweet chimey way.

The Liverpool demands the same attention to deal, component quality, preamp noise issues and presence wiring. In other words lead dress is important yes. :)

The Liverpool is my favorite of the bunch.

Filament wiring is PITA - just like the rocket. Worth the effort

Ok, now I'm even Jonesing for a Rocket more than before. Went home after work today and cranked up my 1962 AC-30. It has original Blues for speakers and broken in nicely. I have always loved this amp but find myself wanting a bit more crunch on tap. need to formulate plans to try to build the rocket :D
