Missed this, congrads on the amp's return home. The TADS look to be Russian EH EL84s, very similar to the Saratov EL84s if not the same thing.

On this note, just remember, if you find this too bright overall, the J/Js are much darker. In fact, I think the power tubes are the biggest voicing control on the amp.

Anyways, have fun!

Rooster, thanks mate...
I put a set of Philips in after the TADS, I like them a bit better. I also have a set of Saratovs on the way which I will probably use on a day to day basis and keep the TADs for backup, save the Philips for a rainy day.

Hey, OK then, you can be the beta guy here? My contention is that the Saratovs and the TADs that you have are EHEL84s - based on pics. I am sure you couldn't get the same ma draw set duplicated, but even so, I am betting there are still some strong sonic similarities. Could you A/B the TADs and the Saratovs for me, physically and then sonically?

This would resolve some questions I have about cork sniffing events. Thanks!

Rooster,

Physically the plate structures are similar with a few small differences.
The TADs look to have welded plates whereas the Saratovs have a crimped plate. The getters and fins look to be the same. In size the Saratovs are approx 1/4 inch taller (bottle) and have thicker pins.

As to tone differences, I found the Saratovs to be clearer but not necessarily brighter than the TADs, especially clean. When overedriven the TADS give a smoother tone whereas the Saratovs are a more crunchier drive.
I used to have a Matchless DC30 clone and from memory the same held true for that amp as well.
I don't mind the TAD's at all, an improvement over the JJ's IMHO, not as dark sounding.
Of course this my take on the differences
Cheers
