Hello Guys.
I've built a few years back a few asteroid clones.
Overtime i've equipped them with vvr "power manager".
And now I am curious to know if any of you have tested a Larr mar arrangement for playing the beast at reasonable sound pressures.
Giving a really quick look via the scope at the waveforms around the circuit, seems that the first responsible of the distortion character is the PI. pls.Correct me if I'm wrong.
So I was wondering about the larr mar and how it works in the asteroid.
Any experience to share from your side?
Thanks in advance.
Paolo

Re: asteroid and Larr mar anyone?
Paolo,
How well does the VVR work with the 60 watts of the Asteriod?
I have not tried the Lar-Mar or PPIMV either, so no help there, sorry.
I have built two Asteroids so far the last one went into a Bassman Head and I changed the cap arrangement since no way I could stack those 80uf in that Fender chassis.

Re: asteroid and Larr mar anyone?
The vvr works well. I mean, its' not meant to be something like a power control that goes to zero volume.
But let's say that the amp can be calmed down enough.
I've made also some tests using at the same time the vvr and an airbrake on the cabinet.
If you use low settings both on the vvr and on the airbrake ( i mean no bedroom levels are intended!) you can also get some interesting tones at decent volumes, without loosing much of the feeling of the amp.
What I find really problematic is the cabinet and loudspeaker coupling.
I'm well with a greenback 2x12 closed back cabinet and it's not bad either with g12-65 in a 2x12 dumble inspired vertical cab ( robben ford style cabinet). Still have to get a 4x12 that I like more than the two 2x12 I've mentioned.

Re: asteroid and Larr mar anyone?
Just the Express and Rocket here. Have never tried the VVR so no comparison to make. My bet is the LarMar would work very well. It's $6 in parts, use a speaker jack, bust a move.

Re: asteroid and Larr mar anyone?
It should work just as well as in a plexi or an 800, since the Komet's have the same output stage to all intents and purposes.
It will, of course, suffer from the insurmountable problem that the presence control will lose effect because the negative feedback loop serves no useful purpose at low output levels, but if this doesn't concern you then go for it.

Re: asteroid and Larr mar anyone?
Er, Aikens reports this Presence control result with a MV and it makes sense. However, in a performance/usage situation, the bass frequencies are typically reduced when the MV is engaged... Er, so I think any subtraction of the one thng is offset by the other. Besides, you still have the means to increase the treble if you would want to, via the tone control. But I seriously doubt you would need to.
