Voicing an Alessandro Working Dog

Post by wingobingo »

My first post here - own an Alessandro Working Dog Doberman - an EL34 based 2/12" 40w amp. Would like to mod voicing for more "jangle". Mids are great but could use some top boost.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated

Do you have the schematic? Knowing the values in the tone stack, coupling caps, and the preamp tube cathode bias would make it easier than just shooting in the dark.

depending on brand and age of the tubes it could be as easy as a tube change.

What's the topology of that amp?

If you can throw us a bone of what you're working with, we can share more direct answers.

Not really sure how to answer - 2 EL34's (both new Tung Sol) and 3 12AX7's for tubes. Amp built by George Alessandro

What I'm trying to discern is whether you have a cathode follower before the tone stack or if the tone stack is after the first gain stage. Also whether the cathodes of the preamp tubes are bypassed with capacitors (and if so, what values). Does the amp already have a bright switch? Cut control? Master volume? Values of coupling capacitors?

All these are places to modify the values to vary tone.

Or maybe you just need to change strings?

No bright switch. Single input/not really a master volume - more like an attenuator that cuts output to about 35%. Pre-amp tubes are JJ's
