what was the fella with the prs playing through? that sounded real nice as well.
how do you like the express? pretty cool amp isnt it ? sure sounds great.
it took me a while to get used to all the um....knob play LOL , in order to go from clean to mean, but im getting the hang of it.
i really thnk that a couple of you scumnicos with that amp will put a smile on your face. i have golds, but you know where im going. alnicos sound awesome with these amps

You're too kind, but thanks!

Big Mike (TGP mod) was playing his Thorn (not a PRS) through Ron Thorn's limited edition JTM45 w/Celestion Alnicos (reissue) in a closed back 2x12, Tele was through a pedal board, don't know what amp, though.

I'll be doing speaker testing in the 2x12 this week, so I'll probably try a couple of 30w Scumnicos in there with mine.

Yeah that's Big Mike. He can hand out lessons to a lot of players (me included!).

I had the Wreck set at about 1:00 for all of the controls, with the bright switch down. Rolled the guitar volume down to 4-5 for chords, rolled it up to 10 for solos. Beats the crap out of distortion/od pedals.

down? thats the brightest setting right? that way on mine anyway.
i usually just have mine in the up position and i run my tones around noon give or take. such a great amp design. i love not using pedals for solos.
I just take it in a studio sometimes and just lose myself.
i will have to try the down position !

You can also try this setup:

Altec 4178C 8ohms with

a MS-12 Mesa Boogie Speaker.

Caspar still uses this setup. Kenny and he worked on it back in the day.

Southbay Ampworks wrote:I haven't tried a 2x12 yet with my Express (AM build, just got it Thursday!) yet, but I plan to this week.

Today I did manage to attend the Thorn Inlay NAMM Event with a 1x12 adjustable back (had it about 4-5 inches open) loaded with one M75 65w, and it sounded damned nice.

I might have sold a couple of Express clones for Allyn. One player told me he had an Express built by another builder and his didn't sound nearly as good as the one Allyn built that I just got.

Many thanks to Glen K for the EQ tone settings phone call last night!

You can all get good chuckle out of this video just posted, I don't show up for a solo until 3:30. That's an Orville LPC w/Motor City Black Belt #2 pickups in it I'm playing, plugged straight in, no fx, the Alex attenuator was there for a previous demonstration, not used for the gig. I'd never played this song before, so there's nothing like winging it on the fly!

I use 2 jensens. a c12n and a jc12-70el in a ported 2x12, they are alot cleaner sounding than celestions.

Got a buddy that had 2 golds in a 2x12, was pretty terrible with his express.
He ran them attenuated all their life so never really broke them in.
He ended up trading one and selling the other in the elusive chase for the right speaker.
Then he heard my gold.. he tried trading me "any two speakers i own" theres one of Jims in that mix.. he went home hands empty ;)
Mines been hammered, and it sounds amazing with the express, in fact just about any amp.
You categorically can not judge a speaker till its broken in.
I have a quad of pre rola greenies, nearly as old as me, and they are the shi$. But they been hammered for a LONG time!
Got a weber alnico, that i dig the tone of, but it seriously needs loosening up.
Might have to put it in my sons cab and have him let at it!

Azatplayer your son needs to break in all my speakers ;) The gold in that 1 x 12 Z Cab sounds fantastic! After trying alot speakers in my 1 x 12 and 2 x 12 open back Ulbrick cabs, What suit my express the best are a G12-65 in the 1 x 12 (a single pre rola g12m sounds amazing in my smaller 1 x 12 cab), and in the 2 x 12 i settled for a g12-65 and pre rola G12m. Both sound great with the express, the 2 x 12 with the new unbroken Celestion Golds was very bright, amazing how much the golds change once broken in though!
