PT/OT choices for Ceriatone chassis

Post by Ken Moon »

A friend just bought an Expression kit from Ceriatone, minus the transformers.

Will any of the popular Express PTs and OTs fit the holes on Ceriatone's chassis?

He is planning on using 6V6s only, so would the Heyboer "TW Project OT" from Mojo work (it has 6k6 primary only, and not the 5k2). I ask about this one because I have one sitting around unused, and it sounds like it could be used for a 6V6-based Expression, if it fits physically.

Here are the specs for the Mojo OT:

...and the mounting dimensions:

If this OT will be OK, do you have any recommendations for the PT, that will give the proper B+ for 6V6s?

Thanks!

A proper Express is designed to run EL34s or 6V6es without any mods, and therefore the standard Express transformers are exactly what you want.

The 6K6 output is the one to use, but the Mojo one may possibly be one of the earlier ones using M27 lams and not the M19 of the newer Heyboers and the Pacifics. If that's the case then expect a more aggressive amp than you could otherwise get. Heyboer can probably tell you specifically which lams they used since they built the Mojo transformers.

For a PT get one of the Heyboer or Pacific Express PTs and you'll be ready to go. I'm not 100% sure the Edcor PT will have the same mounting holes but that could be an option too and it shouldn't be difficult to find that answer.

I am building a Ceriatone Expression with the Heyboer trannies.

When I enquired about a direct order from Heyboer to Toneslut specs, they said that the Mojo ones are the same. I still ended up buying both direct as Mojo didn't sell the 240V PT.

I can confirm that both Heyboer trannies fit the mounting holes on the Ceriatone chassis, BUT...

The chassis is punched such that it expects the primary and secondary wires to come through seperate holes on the PT, whereas the Heyboer PT has all of the wires coming out of the same point and won't fit through the punched hole underneath. I'm guessing that the Ceriatone PT differs in this respect.

I ended up buying one of these 20mm punches to enlarge the punched hole and fitted a bigger grommet:

The punch worked really well despite its cheap price.

Thanks for the replies :)

I'll get the Heyboer HTS-5199 PT from RJ Guitars, with the 120v primary and 300-260-0-260-300 HT secondaries, and go ahead and use the Mojo OT I already have.
