I'm getting ready to install my 2nd VVR3 on an express clone...the first one I installed worked out great. I did, however, have to also install DC blocking caps to keep the DC from backing up and causing "scratchiness" in the pots when the VVR was toward it's maximum settings. No big deal, really. Well worth it.
I understand that by switching out the vvr's 100k resistors (which offer a drop to 10% power ) with 200k resistors I will get a drop to 20%. This would be great...I really don't need THAT much attenuation. Just a bit...
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here has experimented with this sort of thing on an express and dicovered a resistor(s) value that would offer a little attenuation without having to install the DC blocking caps?

Re: Anyone mod their VVR3?
You just need to change R1 and R2 on the board. That's it. It really depends on the amount of B+ you are using on the preamp tubes as to how low you can go with the resistors. Usually it is somewhere between 330k and 220k. 270k might be a good starting place

Thanks, Dana!
I'll give the 270k's a try and report back.
Great gadget you've got there, BTW!

Re: Anyone mod their VVR3?
After trying a couple of different values, I ended up using 330k. I'm very pleased with the results. No need for DC blocking caps...no scratchiness whatsoever on the pots. The amp gets nowhere near bedroom volumes but that's fine with me...this is an express for god's sake...but it definitely takes that painful edge off of it. Makes it much more usable in a small club setting.
Also, I took the old vvr setting label off and put a new one on...it now reads "loud" and "louder".

Glad you found a combination that worked for you. The lable is a nice touch.KellyBass wrote:After trying a couple of different values, I ended up using 330k. I'm very pleased with the results.
