A recap of the oddball stuff in my express..........

Post by PlinytheWelder »

Since I put some weird stuff in mine I thought I'd lay it out in case anyone missed it.

1. Infineon Silicon Carbide rectifiers.. Supposedly these are close to a perfect diode with no switching noise and RF hash.

2. Vishay/Dale metal film resistors... I use these in everything, I love the way they sound.

3. Jensen, Astron and Russian PIO caps. I have them in my guitars and I thought I'd try them here.. It worked.

4. Old Amphenol RG-174 on both of V1's grids... IMO, shielded cable here is just good practice.

5. Multisection can caps. Good idea copped from Dana Hall, cleaner layout.

6. Flipped the output tubes 180 degrees and copped the grounding scheme from Allyn's 80W express and Randall Aiken's site. Note the isolated input and speaker jacks. This is just good modern practice.

7. Dana Hall's VVR3... It works and it's fun to play with....

8. Lar-Mar PPI Master Volume.. I haven't put this in yet, but I will. Dimed, it's like it isn't there and in use it's the most transparent MV I've used in other amps. It ought to work well with the VVR.

Edit:
9. Woops...Forgot... Rubycon "Black Gate" cathode bypass caps.
I like the way these sound, too.

Pliny - What is the mouser part number for the diode you chose? You used two pair overall. Wouldn't two overall do the job? How long have these been out and the price is much cheaper that the Freds - why do you think this is?

Did you run the typical 1N4007s first - check the sonics - and then switch to this fast diode and sonic check again? That would be good to know. Thanks.

I used these:

They were a lot more expensive when I got them over a year ago. The first ones that I ever heard of, made by Cree were over $20 each when they came out several years ago.
I used two in series to get the voltage rating up.

I just put em in and they sound fine. Got one in the bias supply, too. I'm gonna use them all the time now. No need for RC snubbers to quiet them down.

I will pick some of the diodes up and try them, might be fun. And overall your amp is pretty radical now that I look at it again.

And on that note, can you explain the sonic effect of the cap that attaches to the pair of 100K resistors and goes to ground? Where does this idea come from anyway? I asked you about it before but I didn't pursue the 'why' followup. Thanks.
