Cut and Presence Controls

Post by PCollen »

I thought that the CUT control was an alternative to the Presence control for amp having no NFB. But I recently noticed some fixed-biased amps with NFB having BOTH Cut and Presence controls. Are having BOTH highly desirable, or overkill.

I've thought about doing both in an amp. More flexibility of tweaking not just the amount but also the texture of treble.

I put a cut in my liverpool. The extra connections are very short...on the order of 1 inch. For diy, why not?

I put a cut in my Express. It is not needed.

The Komet amps had Cut controls.. dunno how useful they are I tried one in my Express based amplifier and wasn't too sure i'd ever use it so it's gone now.

And....?

Do you feel that the Presence, or the Cut, has more sonic influence ? Which do you tweak, and which do you set and forget ?

I'm glad I have it. I tweak both...starting with Cut dialed out. It seems to affect slightly lower highs than the presence. I also adjust Cut for different guitars more than the other knobs (which stay around 12 to 1 o'clock, as others have noted).

I find the cut control to be redundant in an amp with a presence and treble control. It does do something a little a different, but between the treble, presence, and tone control on the guitar I can get pretty much what a cut control would do. I do think it's valuable, however, in a non-NFB amp, especially with EL84s. IMHO, I say use the panel space for something else.

I have an express I built with a 6sl7 preamp and it doesn't have as much gain. I crank the prescence and it gets nice and mean, use the cut control to tame some of the highs.

Remember that most presence controls are in the form of global negative feedback which cleans up the distortion a bit.
The addtion of the cap just adds some tonal benefits to it.

as I understood, turning up the presence control boosts the highs by "cutting the amount of hight frequencies being cut out" http://www.aikenamps.com/ under... tech info.....advanced......frequency response shaping via feedback. That's what it does in my amp anyway, more gain but more highs. I'm sure Ken had a plan.
