choke substition

Post by andrew »

Hi, I do not have the proper choke for a Rocket but I do have a Hammond 157G. Would it be a suitable replacement?

I think that is a bit light on the current capacity.

I'm not positive it won't work ok but why take the chance.

I think you want the 158L

Rating: 15 Henries, 75 mA
Max. VDC: 400
Resistance: 411 ohms

Thanks Structo, I'll probably just use a 1k resistor and play it safe. I did some searching on Aiken's site and he said for a typical 50 watter go with a 50-60ma choke. Allow 5-10ma for the screens and 1-2 ma for the preamp tubes plus more just to be safe (26ma total). I have a 300-0-300 PT, 2-KT66, three 12ax7s, and a Dynaco 470 clone OT.
On the high end I get 26ma. The 157G has 40ma current capability. Do you think I'm too close to the danger zone? I'd like to get some use out of them I have two. Thanks again.

If those current calculations are correct then yes you should be ok.
You may have to adjust your dropping string to dial in the voltages but it should work.
