Favorite speaker for Rocket Clone?

Post by procos »

I just received a rocket clone built by a very popular builder who likes to remain anonymous. I played a friend of mines a few months back and after playing it I knew I had to have one built. Anyways it arrived a few weeks back and am trying to decide on what speakers to use with it. I currently have played it through a few of my cabs. One is a Germino 2 x 12 closed back with Greenbacks. The other is a Marshall HW 4 x 12 with Celestion Heritage G12H's. I like the 4 x 12 with it best but I also have a nice vertical Tone Tubby 2 x 12 that is currently unloaded and am going to be buying some speakers for it. Wondering what everyone uses? I am considering either getting 2 more Heritage G12H's because I just love that speaker but also thought of maybe getting either a set of Celestion Blue's or the ASW Alnico's. My only concern with the Blues is that I play my Rocket at about 3:00 o'clock so it is putting out alot of distortion at that point and am afraid the Blues might fart out. I pretty much play with alot of crunch and when I want some clean I just roll the guitar volume knob back. What are you guys using?

Thanks,

Chuck

Try a Weber Blue Dog alnico with a Weber Silver Bell Ceramic.

Clyde,
Thanks so much for the reply. I guess I should have mentioned that Weber and Scumback speakers are the only ones I am not interested in. I have never played a Weber or Scumback that I have liked.

Thanks,

I've got an awesome sounding 2x12 cab with a Weber alnico bluedog and silverbell which I put together about 10 years ago. That's the combination that Paisley ended up with in his Z's. Go figure. I can say from personal experience that it's a great combination, and sounds superb with the Rocket. The bluedog gives the vox honk (or chime if you prefer, but it's more honk to my ears) and the Silver fills out the lows.

If for some reason you can't bring yourself to play Webers, then I can also say the combination of a g12h30 and an Alnico Gold is very good with the Rocket. The Celestion is more congested then the Webers. The combination, sounds especially good overdriven. However, my personal favorite with my Rocket is a 4x12 closed back with nicely broken in Greenbacks.

The Rocket changes character very dramatically when you switch speaker cabs, so I think having a couple different voices cab-wise, is a really good thing.... Good luck with the quest..........

I guess I could give the Webers another try. I have never tried there Alnicos. I have owned a few different Webers that were replica's of old jensen's and I didn't care for them. I also owned a California which I didn't like. I bet a Celestion Heritage G12H and either Blue or ASW Alnico would sound great as well. Thanks for the help.

Silver Bell alnico is my second choice with the Blue Dog. A local player who I built an AC30 for several years ago uses this combination and loves it and it does sound good.

If you guys were ordering the Blue Dog/Silver Bell combination for a 2x12, for use w/ a Rocket, would you order the 30 Watt, or the 50 Watts version?

My player with the AC30 gigged hard with 15-watters for 3+ years, no problems.

Get the 50W if you prefer a smoother/rouder sound, the 30W if you fancy a lil' bit more bite. IMO the 50W version works best with voxen but YMMV.

Totally different from the others- here it is FWIW

I have a kt 66 rocket combo with 2x10
Eminence ragin cajun and eminence Ramrod
It is quite the ac/dc machine when cranked. Perhaps not what you're looking for, but very chimey still with the guitar backed down

As a stand-alone cab I have a oversized 2x12 pine cab with a Ceramic Tone Tubby and a Eminence Private Jack.
The sound is awesome. Very big, open, lots of bottom and the cleans rival anything I've heard. Push it and it just gets better.

Again, FWIW

.........Now where did I put it?

Weber 1230 ceramic is also nice with the Blue Dog, some of my guys prefer it to the Silver Bell.

The OP also mentioned Austin Speaker Works speakers a couple times. Anybody here ever tried them? They're not for the faint of heart, becuase you've got to mortgage the house to buy them. That is always a red flag for me. Like Analog Man , Zendrive, and Tim pedals. Ain't gonna pay $200, $300, $400 for a pedal that cost the builder $30 to build.

Anyway, I've been curious about the ASW speakers as well. Are they stellar? Or is just the price stellar?

I use a 212 openback with Vin30/G12H most of the time. Sometimes 412 with English Vin 30 run in stereo mode two amp split.

I have a Dr Z 212 openback with alnico blues 15w but reserve that cab for my Stangray. The Rocket sounds great through this cab as well. Alnico have such a chime.
