My rocket begins to break up around 11:00 oclock. By 2 o'clock, it's a raging AC/DC machine.M Fowler wrote:I don't know that should a clean sucker now, I can't get any dirt out of mine unless its at 2 o'clock or more. Hence the reason I want to try that foot switchable 10uf.

Re: Rocket Feedback
Rawn, I have your layout/schematic so I will go over that to see the difference, thanks.

Which Rocket build layout are you referring to? I think I have about 3 different variations.
Re: Rocket Feedback
Rawn, I see no difference only the 66k grid at input and of course the switching circuits but otherwise the caps and dropping string is the same.
Your using HTS-5199 PT and Pacific 6k6 tranny?

Re: Rocket Feedback
I looking at the reverb one you posted KT66
Re: Rocket Feedback
The most recent big bottle rocket, I used an Edcore 300-0-300 PT with the 6k6 Pacific OT. The big bottle I did before that I used all Pacific. 280-250-0-250-280 PT with a 5v tap, and the 6k6 OT. Before that, I built a straight up rocket using an Edcore 245-0-245 PT, and a Heyboer HTS-8093-1 Dynaco 470 Variant.M Fowler wrote:Rawn, I see no difference only the 66k grid at input and of course the switching circuits but otherwise the caps and dropping string is the same.

Re: Rocket Feedback
Does the schematic you have of my build show .022uf caps for the PI coupling caps? I changed them to those values. Stock is .047uf I think. I believe Normster version used .1uf...at according to a layout I have of his big bottle /w reverb build.
Re: Rocket Feedback
No the one I have is .047 and your correct Normster's is .1 so I have the non reverb using stock Rocket .047 and the Reverb one is exactly like Normsters. The non reverb amp is darker tone. Neither one can break up very earlier.
Re: Rocket Feedback
Looks like you've built a big bottle rocket with, AND, without reverb. I've only built big bottle rockets WITH reverb. So, I guess I cannot compare "apples to apples" the way you can with your two builds. All I know, and what started us dialoging here, is that the Rocket is primarily a clean amp, with some very nice crunch/grind with turned up.
I remember reading where Allyn said that his rocket build didn't start breaking up till about 1 oclock. Perhaps you have one closer to the real deal.

Re: Rocket Feedback
My Traditional EL84 based Rocket does have nice breakup earlier and a nice chime. The traditional Rocket is something people should considering building.
I was just like others and wanted to hear what a big bottle Rocket would sound like.
Then after you and others were posting those great reverb models I knew I had to go that direction as well and glad I did.
I'll have to do some experimenting to see what it takes to get breakup sooner but not too soon if you know what I mean.

Re: Rocket Feedback
Hmmm, I don't really call an amp that breaks up by 11:00 a clean machine but I can only assume with the KT66 tubes that you have quite a bit more volume than my amp at 11:00.
My amp is about that now on the dial but because the 6V6 tubes only put out around 20 watts if that, it isn't that loud by the time it breaks up.
I suppose for a quiet setting it would be more than adequate.
Don't get me wrong, I like what I am hearing enough to want to build a proper big bottle Rocket Reverb down the road.
This is the third iteration for this amp of mine.
First it was a 5E3 Deluxe build, then more of a Plexi type amp and now a Rocket preamp section.
I really didn't change the power amp much other than change the bias because with the added tube and current draw the voltages were drawn down a bit more.
My speakers are also pretty efficient being the 2 x EVM 12L .
I do have other speaker cabs I should try with this amp.
All in all I am happy where this amp is now.

Yes, with el-84s, kt66s, and kt77s it is loud and clean at around 11 oclock...hence a clean machine.Structo wrote:Hmmm, I don't really call an amp that breaks up by 11:00 a clean machine but I can only assume with the KT66 tubes that you have quite a bit more volume than my amp at 11:00.
