Master Volume or Cut Control in Standby Switch hole?

Post by arfy »

I'm thinking of using single switch for on/off and standby and using the unused hole closer to the center of the chassis for a PPI master volume of the Matchless type that mixes the post PI signals and as the master is turned down or maybe a Cut control like on a Komet.
Think that's a bad location? I suppose I'll twist the wires and run them along the top front of the chassis to stay away from the power filter grounds and the transformer wires but it would still be near all that noisy stuff. Any comments?

For the Cut control the position should be OK.

I would not recommend the Matchless PPI Master Volume (which is a cross-line MV) for an amp that has negative feedback. You could do a search on that topic. I believe there is a thread in this forum discussing a special Master Volume where you replace the 1M grid load resistor in the PI with a single 1 MA pot. The schematic is included in this thread. This works well although I have not yet tested it in a TW-style amp.

Overall, the decision Cut vs. MV depends on what disturbs you most - the brightness or the volume.
