One other thing to think about with Padauk is that if you don't apply a heavy finish, the open grain will remain open (you can see the open pores). There are grain fillers that you can use to close up the grain so that your finished product doesn't show any of the holes. Its about the consistency of sour cream. You rub it on the wood, and then scrape it off against the grain with a plastic trowel. This leaves the filler in the pores. After it dries, you sand, and then seal and then spray your finish. You can achieve some interesting finishes because you can tint the filler to just about any color you want.

It just depends on what you want it to look like in the end. I've done it both ways and personally prefer the natural open look which is well represented by Ken's speakers above (which by the way are beautiful).

Good luck, and post some pics of the finished product!

Got my Woodcraft kit today for Diana

and of course, I reversed some of the dimensions; this is after reading DrHulsey's directions around 8 times JUST TO BE SURE I GET IT RIGHT
Well it's still usable, just wider and lower than expected. Instead of 2.5 inches of headroom above the tranny, there is 1.5 inches...hopefully enough for cooling space. As for the width, I'll just narrow it some with a table saw. The cherry is actually pretty nice grained. In the photos, the first photo is currently the bottom; the second photo can be seen with the chassis in it; I may just flip it and use the first photo as the top...what are your opinions? As for the chassis, this is the first time it has been out of its box since I've owned it. It used to belong to a TGPer who bought from John Speck; Paul Ruby built it for John; it's a Rocket clone. I took the opportunity to take photos for you guys.

Have a great weekend...I left my 136 adorable students early today because last week, one of them gave me a nice dry cough which I've suffered through all week..as a way of returning the favor, I assigned them lots of work and reading on Ancient Greece :D

Hey guys...good looking head cabs to those who posted. Question...what type of joints are you using when constructing? I guess just a simple miter joint with biscuits maybe?

I'm wanting to make a custom 2 x 12 speaker cab to match a amp head I'm putting together. Even though this will not be a "touring" set...mostly just sitting there in my house...I do want it to be strong and durable. I originally wanted to do an all dovetail joint thing...but decided I didn't want to see the dovetails on the finished wood.

Well, I figured I could stray a bit since I'm the OP.
