Express & Liverpool "Tweaker Kit"

Post by gearhead »

Heh all,

I'm about to do a big order from diff suppliers for express and liverpool builds. Have all the schematic stated values, but given your experience, what would be some good alternate values to get to "tweak" these amps? Mostly resistors, and to some degree high-impact cap values.

Shame of it is, I've got gobs of low wattage components from building stompboxes, but alas, they might go poof in amps.

Thanks,
Dave

I would get:

33K, 47K, 86K, 100K, 130K & 150K res ... two of each. You can use these to tweak the slope resistor in the tone stack, and the "clipping stage" grid leak resistor which is a hot one for tweaking.

Also, .001uF capacitors, and probably .0022uF, .0033uF ... maybe a couple of each, to tweak the "clipping stage" coupling cap another hot tweaker item I'd think. If your amp is overly bright (like in an open-back cab) then you might even use a .001uF for a plate bypass res on the clipping stage.

22K & 75K could be usable for split-load plate on the clipping stage, along with a switch.

Others will certainly chime in :)

I would stock several high voltage elcaps for power supply tuning. Especially the B+1 and B+3 have severe impact on bottom end tightnness.
A switchable split load on the second stage plate also comes in handy for a cleaner tone option. For general response the RC network between 2nd and 3rd stage is definately the place to tweak.
Happy soldering!
