Yes, I scaled the whole amp with the VVR. It seems to work well for the 5e3 style amps at least.

Yes, I still have the amp. I did change some resistor values as suggested by Phil above. It works well. I use a VVR for bedroom playing volumes. Feel free to experiment and post your results!

I'm not sure you're going to get all that much more headroom from a change in output tubes. Now that you've made a nice single-ended amp, why not go for a push-pull build? Much more useable in a band situation. Just my two pence.

I have Weber Thames speakers in a ported 2x12 THD cabinet and they sound very good to me with a Hiwatt-style build. Pretty neutral sounding with maybe just a little bit of bass emphasis.

If you're thinking of going with a neck and body from precision guitar kits, I can vouch for the quality of their work. Still in the finishing phase on this double cut.

Miket, sounds like you have a synth machine there! I feel your frustration as I had similar (but less intense) sounds coming out of my Express build. One thing you may want to try is reducing the value of R7. I changed mine to 67.9k and it cleaned up the abnormal phasing sound but still left plenty ...

I couldn't find the music on his page that you're referring to but I freely admit that I love the understated elegance of Bill Frisell's music in general.

That's awesome for your first build! Be proud. It took me months of tinkering to get my Express clone to sound nearly as good as yours . . . .

I did this to my ax84 HO build, which is basically a JCM800 into a SE output section. I also decreased the value of the resistor on cathode of the CF. The combination does increase compression more so than gain to my ears.
