Re: Effects. How do you avoid killing your tone?
You might try switching around the order you have your pedals chained together. That might help. I think they say you want distortion before delay then reverb, but I can't remember. Since you're getting most of your distortion from the amp that will put it last in the chain. The order of the pedals ...

Re: Inexpensive Electrolytic Capacitors
My DMM reads caps and usually I do check before installing one, but after seeing all this I think I'll be checking every cap from now on!!!
Thanks for posting this heads up. I had no idea this was going on.

Re: Help! I tried to recap my amp!
Congrads Docz!!!. That amp sounds good.
I must admit I had some initial doubts but it appears you have pulled it off.
Now you need to build an amp from scratch. How about that idea.
Good luck

I vote no to that idea.Structo wrote:I will refrain from advising

The added noise is because someone changed the power tubes to El84's at sometime in the past???
I need an update on this post. I'm lost now.

Re: Help! I tried to recap my amp!
Just a though (again
)
Corroded tube socket?
And, you didn't listen to me docz. You were supposed to unplug the amp and check for voltage before sticking your hands in there. Everytime!!!
Be safe man

Re: HI-FI Console Amp
Sorry. I didn't think about the 2-wire cord being in there. That does need upgraded indeed. And I must agree about the electrolytic caps also. (I guess I've been reading/thinking about that multi-page "Help recap my amp" thread too much lately. :D :D ) +1 Structo. Excellent advice and good reply man...

Re: HI-FI Console Amp
+1 on the safety warning!!!!!! Like said above the bias may not be adjustable. If you could post the schematic I'm sure someone here could tell you if it is. As far as the caps goes..... I agree with what you said above, "if it ain't broken - don't fix it". If you have a bad cap you will also have s...

Re: Help! I tried to recap my amp!
IMO only. Some of those terminal strips are insulated but some have at least one lug that is grounded. Some are also grounded for all the lugs I suppose. This ground is established by the mounting lug and bolt that goes through the chassis. If there is any corrosion between the chassis and the termi...

Re: Help! I tried to recap my amp!
The best I can tell by the photos here is what it is. The return loop from the reverb comes off the left lug of the reverb pot - through the 100k resistor - to the center lug of the tone control. Through the white wire going to the left lug of the volume pot. There a 100k goes to a terminal strip lu...

Re: Help! I tried to recap my amp!
In your post you said the reverb is not working now. The signal from the reverb comes back to one side of the volume pot and mixes in with the passing main signal. I would look there for a bad solder joint(?) since you were changing parts in that area. If the tremolo isn't working, and again if you ...

Re: Help! I tried to recap my amp!
The "bucket of parts" was funny. :D When replacing items only do 1 at a time and test out the amp again. If a problem is found you know where to start looking. The signal flow through your amp is from the input jack to V1a, up through the plate, through the .01uF coupling cap where it has a tap for ...

Re: Multimeter question...
I have a Craftsman model 73756 meter and I like it. Has temperature probe, volts, ohms, cap, and clamp-on amps up to 800 amps AC/DC. Zero button, auto off, and nice long leads. I think it was about $100. I've had it for a few years and it is a good well built meter. I use it for everything :D Good l...
