Re: Anyone built a trainwreck and not liked it?
I am in the same boat. The wreck just isn't for me. I prefer a goosed marshall. Everyone else seemed to like the wreck I built, and I did for a while, but the romance fizzled quickly. Too bright, too loud. I also have come to realize that I'm just not an el34 guy and maybe that was the problem. The ...

Re: Tube Rectifier versus SS
I save tidbits I've gathered reading around on different amp sites. I have a word doc that I've saved with tube rectifier voltage drop estimates. Not as accurate as it could be I suppose, but my info says in the neighborhood of 50-60 volts for a 5y3.

Re: Eyelets and Punch for Fishpaper
I bought a eyelette crimper off of ebay, but it really is only so so. You will get better results with the punch and a hammer. I think I ended up with some from london power.

Re: Any tricks for burn-in?
I'm still pretty new to amp building and got started over at the metro forum. What we were doing over there is pulling the power tubes and pumping dynamic music into the front end. This way at least you get the preamp caps cooked up.

Re: solid core wire vs. stranded
I was under the impression that stranded wire is now used for UL certification or ISO900x compliance. I don't really have anything to prove that though lol. That could be the new mojo upcharge...

Re: NOS Tube recommendations
Well the first place to start is to see what you have in your amp for tubes and have an idea of the general direction to head tonewise. To test the waters out without breaking the pig start with a preamp tube and swap it in the various stages in your amp. Progress as addiction sets in.

Re: A softer rectifier...
One of the things also to keep an eye on is the max input capacitance for the rectifier tube... e.g. if you have a capacitor can right after the rectifier, there are limits on how big it can be. I am not an expert on the subject, but know enough to be leary about this. The 5r4gya seems very low at 4...
