Seems the fender looking switcher on stage with him might be used to engage a pedal and not necessarily the amp vibrato (which seems to be on the whole time.)

Haven't tried them myself, but Tubedepot sells PCB based kits with video and very detailed text instructions. Seems to be about as foolproof as you can get short of having someone else build it for you. looking more closely the JTM-45 kit is turret board based. http://www.tubedepot.com/kitsguitar.html
