Just ran into a similar problem with a Matchless 3015. The problem turned out to be a faulty socket. The center of the socket was too large in diameter. I recently built a 5e3 which had an ever-present hum. Turned out to be one of the shorting jacks not doing its job.

That would be the 12v Zener. Yes, I did power up the amp.
