Re: Building/converting a power amp
Yes, that's not difficult at all, in fact maybe easier than redesigning. You'd simply use a switching jack to input to the power amp, and break the signal path from the preamp. Look at the typical loop circuit and use just the return side. Thanks. I'll look around for an FX loop circuit. -- Todd

Re: Building/converting a power amp
Hey Bob - Thanks for the reply. I didn't get notification to the thread update, and just now thought to check it. Your mods description - I'm taking this to mean that your design is dedicating the amp to just the power amp support (I'm a beginner, obviously). Is there a design where I can still use ...

Re: Building/converting a power amp
The input device in this case will have an attenuator on its output.Jana wrote:I think a place to start would be to have an input jack, run the jack to a 1 meg pot and then the wiper of the pot goes to the input of the phase inverter (through the cap of course).
Which cap(s) does the shielded cable go to?

Re: Building/converting a power amp
Sure. Can you post a schematic? Here's a link to the schematic: http://lainhart.net/Amps/5F2V-Schematic.jpg Trading mail with David Allen, he's assuming that the PI can take line-level inputs but he's not proven it or worked it out. He also recommended that I check out Rivera-era Fender amps and th...

Building/converting a power amp
I've got a discontinued Allen amp kit that's basically the normal channel of a Fender BF, about 35-40watts w/ 6L6s. I'd like to try and build this such that I can take a variable pre-amp out of a modeler and put it right into the power section of this amp, sort of like Atomic Amps Reactor. Can someo...

Re: Tone mods to an Allen Old Flame
I'll also point out that keeping the MV full-on introduces too much hiss, so that's not an option. Perhaps that points to some bad build on my part, or it's unavoidable.oldhousescott wrote:A few ideas in no particular order to maximize clean tone...

Re: Tone mods to an Allen Old Flame
A few ideas in no particular order to maximize clean tone... -- remove the bypass cap from V1B -- replace V4 with a 12AT7 -- change the dropping resistor values in the PS to 1K and 4.7K like a Twin -- remove the MV circuit, or always keep it full on -- use a solid-state rectifier Thanks for that. I...

Tone mods to an Allen Old Flame
Hi - Mod/build-newbie here. If I wanted to play with mod'ing the build of my Allen Old Flame for clean tone, where would you recommend I start? Would any of O'Connor's books give me a clue, or are there other sources? The amp has 6L6GCs with a GZ34 rectifier tube. Brandon - do you do this work? In o...

thanks - I'll check that out.oldhousescott wrote:I've not used one, but the Ironsounds FX loop gets good reviews. Looks like a pretty simple installation as well.

Adding an effects loop to an Allen Old Flame?
Hi -
Newbie here. I just built an Allen Old Flame. It came out great and I'm thinking of more builds/mods.
Where would I start if I wanted to investigate putting an effects loop in this amp? Is this crazy either technically or sonically?
