Warmoth Neck Tolerances -- How Good (or Bad) Are They?

I just took delivery on a Warmoth "Boatneck" profile neck with "Modern" construction. It doesn't appear to be anywhere close to meeting their advertised specs for thickness, but before I start complaining with them I thought I'd ask if my expectations are out of line. TLDR: The neck is advertised to...

Re: Cool 1950's 'Atomic Age' Tabletop Radio

Is that one of the "All American Five" radios that come with a hot chassis that's only insulated by the plastic case?

Be careful.

Re: Snap in caps in eyelet boards?

Ditch the eyelets and drill holes for the terminals per the data sheet dimensions. Then just solder leads to the cap terminals under the board. Once upon a time I tried spacing eyelets at the right distance to allow a snap-in cap to snap-in, being held by the edges of the eyelets. I quickly gave up...

Re: Mojotone Wholesale Account Changes

... my account didn't make the migration to the new website format. The truth is that NOBODY'S account made the changeover. I had the same problem -- when they migrated to the new website my wholesale account lost it's wholesale status, and my entire purchase history was lost. That's a bit of a PIT...

Re: Bench and Shop Lighting

+1 on having movable light sources. Optimally, I like a combination of diffuse base lighting plus an adjustable point light source on the left and right sides of the workpiece, so that I can limit the angle of incidence for the incoming light and manage the angle of reflection so that it's away from...

Re: Evm12l recone kit?

I have a bunch of naked EV baskets that I'd like to recone. 15" mostly. The problem is that it's impossible to find OEM EV cones. anyone got a supplier for a *REAL* 12L, 15L or 15B Series II cone kit? I agree that nothing beats an original driver, but I'd like to recone these empty baskets that aren...

Re: Celestion Peacemaker?

Good point about the lack of accessibility in closed back cabs. In that context the Eminence design loses it's advantage of being adjustable. In a closed cab you're not able to frequently tweak the speaker's efficiency, and it becomes like the Celestion which has a fixed efficiency value. That's OK,...

Re: The Immortal Amplifier

Greg, in addition to the people you've mentioned, I miss Steve Ahola. It's sad that his site, blueguitar.org, became lost when he was gone and unable to renew the domain name registration, and somebody snatched it. Tboy was able to host an archived version of blue guitar at MEF, but now they're both...

Re: Celestion Peacemaker?

a few years back Eminence tried selling something like this -- it was actually a speaker that had a knob on the back of it and allowed you to change the relationship between the magnet and the voice coil using a big knob. It was a very smart approach to a variable attenuator. It did not sell well an...

Re: Tl806 ported cab with different speaker

The Xmax value showes the fisical ability of the speaker to push air back and forth. Lower frequencies need more escursion to be pushed at the same volume of the higher frequencies. The ported cabinet is all about that, air coming out the vents carrying out the lower frequencies information. A spea...

Re: Tl806 ported cab with different speaker

the idea behind the 3-component shelf port in the EV TL series cabs was that you could install a port cover in the middle (across the two braces) to reduce the port area and change the port tuning to change the cab's frequency response. The EV data sheets refer to this as "step down mode,"

Re: The Immortal Amplifier

Even an AB763 Fender is relatively easy to restore. That, and the music that was made with them have given them another kind of immortality. The hardest part about restoring an AB763 -- for me anyway -- is that the kinds of caps that are commonly available for PSU uses keep on changing their footpr...

Re: The Immortal Amplifier

The idea isn't that motor run films are a choice for run-of-the-mill amps; instead, the concept is that compared to electros, they last nearly forever. A hard working tube amp with electros will need a re-cap every decade or so, while an all-film-cap amp will need new caps ever century or two. I ju...

Indeed, they are rated for AC voltage. Here's a sample from CDE:
