Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
Have you determined that the distortion you were hearing was caused by the Fryette?? How do you find the step filters? Nope! I sent the Fryette out to a technician yesterday. Unfortunately, I don't have the opportunity to crank the master to a level where I was hearing it. So I'm somewhat damned to...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
I had the amp running for a few hours this weekend and I'm really happy with the outcome now. It fills the role of the Eric Johnson dirty rhythm amp wonderfully. I threw a BC183 Fuzz Face, TS808, MXR Digital Time Delay and MXR Flanger/Doubler (the old rack units Eric has been using since forever) in...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
If it were me I'd circle back with the person you bought it from and ask if they'd be willing to help you with the warranty. If they haven't registered it with the manufacturer you may be able to simply register it and submit it for repair. Thanks, but the seller already made clear it's none of his...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
Did you buy it new with any type of warranty? Really odd for one to crap out like that right after you just got it! :( Matt J. I bought it used from our local equivalent to Craig's List, the seller bought it in March this year. In the EU manufacturers are obliged to give a 2 year warranty on any of...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
1. I replaced the 68pF cap with a 330pF cap (that's all I had on hand today) and the fizz did not get away. It didn't even change the slightest. Now you know what it isn't ;^) The problem is that I will never get to crank the amp to volume levels where those oscillations start to happen. I could ju...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
Only bad news today, folks: 1. I replaced the 68pF cap with a 330pF cap (that's all I had on hand today) and the fizz did not get away. It didn't even change the slightest. 2. On top of that, my Fryette Power Station crapped out today. I just bought it used about two weeks ago, the unit itself was b...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
Here are the voltages measured about 20 minutes ago (blue are Beasley's build, red are mine):

Note: I have the FX loop sitting between master and the PI input cap. The presence circuit has the position of the cap and potentiometer reversed.

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
Thanks, but now a question for all you real tube amp professionals in this forum: I was able to lower the bias pot range by replacing the 56k resistor feeding the balance pot with a 33k resistor. I'm now able to bias the tubes from around 30mA up to well above 60mA. Sweet! I then spent the afternoon...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
Nothing super exciting, but I wired up this footswitch for the amp today. It's a 1590DD sized enclosure that I had drilled, powdercoated and UV printed at Tayda Electronics. Came out really clean, love their printing service. https://i.imgur.com/o7i3xCi.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/xbTLTBs.jpe...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
I am hearing some good tones in there! This was with the master volume on 0.00001 because I didn't dare to go higher yet. But the tone is there for sure! Does the distortion only occur when the FET is switched on? No, there is some slight distortion happening when I crank the preamp volume. What ar...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
The only uncertainty would be the OT primaries "correct" which is always a 50% chance. (altho I feel like I'm 90% wrong every time lol) Joke's on you, the OT was indeed wired the wrong way around. I almost fell off my chair when I flipped off the standby switch  Okay Gentlemen, here's where I ...

Re: Steel String Singer #005 build
Cool! I was/am just concerned because some of the anode voltages are much higher than what Beasley had in his build. Look at the reverb recovery stage and the reverb mixer - that's almost 90V above what he measured. :? I'm just lacking the experience with what to see as normal/unconcerning behavior ...
